I am considering Wymondham college for my kids. I visited the school and would like to know how it is from an academic point of view.

I’m sorry I can’t help but I’m also interested so would love to know what others experiences are !!

Hi. My three went to Wymondham College as day pupils and did alright - two to well-rated Russell Group unis and the third about to go to Med School - so I may be biased but I'd say the school is excellent at drawing out potential. It regularly gets several into Oxbridge and managed 13 offers to one year group quite recently. It has slipped slightly from it's high-point a couple of years ago as "the best performing state school in East Anglia" but league tables, eh? It does proper A Levels, not General Studies-type fillers and most of the staff are well-motivated and dedicated. Big on Maths, great Language facilities, particularly talented English Department and the History department churns out grade As...but remember that it's a comprehensive, albeit a very middle-class one. There are no specific academic entrance requirements and so it gets a mixed bag of students. We made a deliberate decision to move to the closest village (NOT Wymondham, in case you're checking house prices!) to improve our chances of getting in on grounds of proximity. Similarly motivated parents do tend to have a vested interest in making sure their children actually work at school. It all helps to push up results. In summary, I'd say it's a happy, well-run school that values good grades but it isn't a genius factory. Bright kids will prosper and average ones will do better than they would in most schools. Hope that helps.

Very helpful thank you .

Oh, and it has music scholarships about which I know nothing as mine are tone-deaf, but I'm guessing from the name might apply to you...

Trumpetboysmum · 29/11/2018 21:56

Yes that’s definitely a reason for applying !! Definitely something to think about thank you

It's a good school and good value for money. Slouches and low performers asked to leave after GCSEs. Bodes well for a productive 6th form :-)

Thank you very much

Very interesting to me because we have a flat in Wymondham. Don't have children at school any more but it's nice to know we have a property in a good area with a good school. I know nothing about Wymondham though it looks decent, what I've learned here sounds like a good selling point as and when we sell. Husband works up there which is why we bought and it is a lovely, quite spacious flat - was very cheap too compared to London. Prior to that we had a little place in Hingham, gorgeous village but a bit off the beaten track.

Anyway, good luck with your child's application & apologies for going off the point.

My ds' dad went there as a boarder. We were thinking about sending ds there but it's the wrong side of the city for us.

I've had a look at the prospectus and wiki entry. The school looks great, very up to date. If I had school children and lived up there I'd certainly consider that school.
