Wychwood School

Hello!

My dd is in y11 state boarding in a big school, she's never liked the size and so I'm looking for something different at sixth form. She feels overlooked and I've heard that wychwood has really good pastoral care and individual attention?

I know it's a long shot but does anyone have a girl at wychwood?

Currently she is at a co ed school and I was wondering about whether they have socials with boys, dd tends to be better friends with boys and this definitely isn't a deal breaker but I think it would be good as obviously the real world isn't just girls! I've never had a dc at a single sex school though so I may be wrong about how important it is.

Thank you!!

A parent at DD's sports club has a daughter in Wychwood sixth form - she says her daughter is really happy there as its very small and nurturing. Didn't say anything about interactions with boys though. On the other hand DD met a girl from there who didn't like it because she found it claustrophobic! So very much a case of whether a girl's personality fits I guess.

I definitely get the impression it "does what it says on the tin" in terms of offering a nurturing environment so if that's what you're looking for it should work out fine.

I am a current parent at Wychwood. I can answer most of your questions, I hope!

Yes, the pastoral care is outstanding, it really is a lovely environment to be in. The teacher care about my daughter and what she can achieve.
There is no hiding as it’s so small, so she certainly won’t be overlooked!

They do have socials with boys in the younger years, I am not sure about sixth form (not there yet!), but they do have Oxford on their doorstep so I am sure there are lots of social events to go to.

I think there is an open event soon, go have a look? I have no doubt you will love it. The headmistress is amazing, she really takes the time to get to know the girls well and therefore can get the best from them.

She will also answer all your questions honestly, which should help you make the right decision for your daughter.

If I can answer any further questions please feel free to PM me.

Depending where you live, there are smallish boarding schools that are not as small as Wychwood. They have a broader curriculum and have better music and sport. I think individual attention sounds great but you need a bit more to a sixth form than that.

I believe the curriculum is very vide, usually if a girl requests to do something that is not currently on offer, they go off and find a teacher for that subject.
Also the music department is outstanding! Did you go to any of their preforming arts evenings or indeed last years Christmas service? They have amazing gifted girls and amazing music teachers.

I'm a WW parent too. My dd boards but is not in 6th form.
I don't agree that the curriculum is smaller than any other school. Basically, if a girl wants to study a subject, they'll make it work. Even if it means teaming up with another school for stuff like drama.
Personally I wouldn't worry about the single sex thing.
The staff really do care about every pupil and make sure each girl does their best. There is a wide range of academic abilities there including girls on to Oxbridge.
Is your dd into anything particulary?

I was impressed by the subjects actually!! Dd really wants to do psychology at a level, and we were finding that some smaller schools didn't have it.

She likes performing arts and is really involved in the music department of her school right now. I did hear the music was very good! Not very sporty so that's not an issue, and really doesn't like art.

Dd is mainly academic thought and is really ambitious, so it's good to hear that they cater for all abilities.

Thank you everyone, if i still can I will sign dd up for the entrance exams :)
