Camden School For Girls Music Waiting Lists

Does anyone know how the two music waiting lists operate? They say they operate an aptitude list and an aptitude and performance list. My DD is at a different number on both music wait lists. So for the aptitude only list, does that mean that is solely a waiting list for the 3 aptitude only places and the second waiting list is only for the five aptitude and performance places? If people offered a music place qualify on distance, would they get the distance place and therefore free up a music place for someone not in catchment, or does it not work like that?

Also interested to know if anyone knows what a music place at CSG actually involves. Is it just a route into the school or does it mean anything in terms of lessons and music opportunities once in the school?

Thanks

I don't think it involves any free lessons unless the girl won one of the 3 aptitude only places and has never played before. Our friends DD got in but she had been going to the North London Conservatoire since she was in reception and has kept going. They are expected to take part in everything music related. Lots of concerts etc but its not like a private school where if she feels she doesnt want to continue shed lose the scholarship. They stay in the school regardless.

That's interesting malmontar, so you think there might be free music lessons for the 3 places? I'd like to know if the waiting list for the 3 music places does operate completely seperately to the waiting list for the 5 performance and also distance waiting lists. Is your friend's DD happy there as far as you know?

I think you may have to ask Camden. I’ve had dealings with them and they’re very helpful. I suspect there my be no office support this week though because of half term. If you find out could you come back and let us know? i would live to know if a music place girl gets in on distance if they give up their music place-I suspect not.

Also just heard a friends child has been told they can’t sit one of their exams there. Their predicted grades weren’t high enough...

I think it’s best to ask the school as to the details of it, I’m sure they can get help with instruments but I’m not sure to what extent. Our friends DD has a pretty hectic music schedule as it is so I don’t think she’d accept any extra tuition. And as she does colourstrings I doubt her teacher would want her to either. She’s really happy there. Commutes from crouch end.

Hi Lima

Did you find out about movement of the music waitlists? We tried to ask the school but they didn't want to say anything beyond 'there is significant movement'

Lima3 · 04/11/2018 10:09

I think that’s correct. I know of a number of girls who either have been offered a music place or are on the waiting list for one and haven’t put CSG as their first choice school.

Thank you Lima.

Any insider information on what waitlist levels got offers in the past few years you can share?

Lima3 · 08/11/2018 22:18

Ooh, I don’t know, just know of my daughter and a handful of girls on the list or with places this year but I don’t know anyone with older girls there and I didn’t speak to anyone from the school in the end. Sorry can’t help more. Is it your first choice?

First time posting here! We’re in the happy position of having been offered a place at Camden, but no idea if it’s a normal place or a music place (she was no 2 on the waitlist for music). We’re outside the historic catchment area (but not by that much) so I’m assuming it’s the latter. Does it make any difference?

Zinnia · 02/03/2019 11:59

Congrats on the place @djd2! If you don't mind my asking, how far are you from the school?

FaithFrank · 02/03/2019 12:11

My friend's dd goes there, got in via a music place. She is just a normal pupil, it doesn't make any difference to what she does in school.

djd2 · 02/03/2019 12:11

1.28 miles. She’s in band A

Zinnia · 02/03/2019 12:54

Well done her! It sounds like it's a music place then, as if not that would be a record distance for a regular place on offer day.

BHStowel · 02/03/2019 16:44

Well done your daughter.

Neighbours and I are guessing that Band B is around 0.47 this year just based on which child got in and which didn’t. We are obviously a boundary area for that band.

Band b is therefore possibly slightly smaller this year than 2018.

Zinnia · 02/03/2019 17:09

It does seem to vary from year to year which bands are the largest/smallest. D was 0.35 last year (too many people trying to game the system by telling their daughters to do badly on purpose perhaps?). I am quite glad it's not an option for us tbh as the stress is bad enough as it is!

BHStowel · 02/03/2019 17:33

I’ve heard that too Zinnia. About parents telling their daughters to deliberately do badly at the tests. I wonder how true it is...

Zinnia · 02/03/2019 18:03

If the last year has taught me anything, it's to be surprised at nothing...!

BHStowel · 06/03/2019 20:57

CSG 2019 distances for all bands are now on their website.
