Any experience of ASD assessment for Y11 girl?

Have name changed for this as don’t want to risk outing dd. Has anyone had any experience of an ASD assessment for a Y11 girl? Dd has been struggling with acute anxiety in school which has been getting worse. She’s academically very able but puts herself under huge amounts of pressure and is often paralysed by perfectionism so takes much longer than she should to finish essays etc. She finds the hustle and bustle of school very hard to deal with and often takes herself off to the library at lunch and break times (despite being in a not particularly big school with excellent pastoral care). She doesn’t seem to have problems outside school but avoids socialising and spends all her free time with her horse. She has a history of self-harming and there is a family history of ASD. The SENCO would like her to be assessed by an educational psychologist to see if there’s an underlying cause for the anxiety - googling the person she’s been referred to, they seem to be a specialist in autism and girls and I know that ASD often presents later in girls.

I was just hoping to hear from anyone else who’s gone through something similar with their dd

Not the same but when we had a dyspraxia assessment for DD1 in y11 it really helped. Being able to 'label' her difficulties made things easier for DD1 and made teachers more understanding too. Also helped for moving on to 6th form.

Hi
You may get more answers if you also post on the SEN boards?
Or National Autistic Society forum.
I'll also PM you.

Have you posted this on the SN boards? Those ladies are in a better position to help you figure things out. Also I’m going to private message you with some additional questions and advice.

What Teen said. The label definitely helps.

What you describe about your DD is very similar to my autistic girl, even down to the horse... bless them. It is not that ASD presents later, it is that it presents slightly differently, through the intensity of special interests and behaviours, rather than interests themselves. Girls tend to work hard to blend in and to mask their ASD at the expense of their wellbeing and mental health. For all ASD DC new challenges tend to pop up and snowball as the demands on them, social and academic, increase over time. My elder DC diagnosed with ASD at 7, statemented in year 6, got new SEN diagnosed in year 10 and run into new and bigger difficulties in 6 form. So I would certainly recommend to explore the diagnosis and help at school. I don't have any experience of assessment in Y11, but I would think that you might explore all the info and threads about ASD, the assessments, the provisions. I would think your DD might need exam arrangements for GCSEs - that requires acting fast.
