hi all

My 10 yr old has given grammar selection test and got 216 whereas benchmark for selection is 218. he is a naturally gifted, talented boy and I feel he should have been easily selected. I wonder if I should ask for the review of his result? or just 2 mars a huge difference? please suggest

In our area you couldn't review the result - are you allowed to do that? If you are you could ask for one but I suspect they can go down as well as up.

Is 218 the pass mark i.e. you cannot apply under that? Or is it last person in March last year? If its the latter, go on the waiting list and he may well get in by September. If its the former, then in our area people offered places were getting quite a bit higher than the passmark.

Look for the elevenplusforum website and find the section which covers your area. People there will be familiar with the system/rules in your area and can advise better than here. You can only appeal an 11+ decision if you put that school on your application form and therefore are not offered a place. If you have a spare slot it may be worth doing this to give you time to decide what to do. You can decide to appeal or not at your leisure. Again the appeals section of the forum website I mentioned will be able to advise on how best to win a case and what evidence to present. best of luck

If this is Begley (I'm guessing from the pass mark and the fact that you have just got the result?), then on the local authority website, it says:

The results have also been provided to head teachers. If you have any concerns about the score your child has achieved, please speak with their head teacher in the first instance, and if they agree that the score is not reflective of the child’s ability, they can submit a request for a review.

Since the actual score is only relevant to determine a) whether the child has passed
and b) if so, are they in the top 180, one would assume that the outcome of a review, should the HT agree to it, would either be, 'assessed selective' or ' no change'? Score isn't relevant for the allocation of places.

You can always name the grammar school on your CAF anyway and decide whether or not to appeal after 1st March, when the school will not have been allocated.
