Hi,

Can anyone recommend a School in the UK for children on the spectrum who don't have any particularly behavioral issues, but do have challenges with language and social interactions? Not sure if I should be looking at schools who specialse with kids on the spectrum, or maybe a private school with small classes and a great SEN department. Would love some advice. Thank you!

@maofsam did you find somewhere?

If you have a girl, consider Bruton School for Girls.

For Girls or Boys, have a look at The Royal School, Haslemere.

Hi.
I am new here. My 10y Old son ASD is starting Very difficult to control his behaviour and very sensory sensitive problems. He is in the special school but doesn’t have enough support for SLT and OT. They don’t have their own. The local authority are come and give the hours to all the children in the school. My son still can not communicate. He repeated wherever I said 😔. How am I supposed to train or teach him. The school doesn’t see that is a problem because he can cope in the classroom. He doesn’t eat in school and sometimes don’t used toilet at all from 9-3. He is holding pee and that’s becoming painful when he released at home . He is very sensitive so he doesn’t do in the toilet I have to give him bottle to use. I’m really worried. I’m thinking that private school will be better to support 1-1. Even if I can get SLT private to work with him he might able to communicate more and he will finding a bit relaxing when he wants to request something or tell us how he is feeling. Sometimes I can feel it he wants to talk to me but he couldn’t. I’m not specialist to train him to talk. I can only do basis.
He can read but he doesn’t understand the meaning so we can’t communicate in writing too. Picture are not working for him because he doesn’t really like to used it. When I show him pictures for communication he kept saying No and started angry. When I force him to eat or do things for himself needs. He is starting attacking me and others. I can not leave him like that. Example he is very fuzzy so constipated I have to give him some medicine for that whether he like it not. When he is in pain can’t go toilet I am so panic. I cannot watch him. Daily Life is very difficult for me. I have 6 years old daughter to look after too. He doesn’t like her always hit her. He doesn’t understand what sister is how she relatives to him. Once he hit her head and she bleed. He doesn’t understand when I am explaining to him not to do. NHS is long waiting list and CHAMS rejected him.
Private ASD specialist doctor, private ASD school. I will try anything for him. Need advice please
Thank you.
We are in west London, tw3 area

@Zuzu2015 - you might be better copying and pasting your comment into your own thread. People coming on here will read the original post and respond to that, rather than reading yours and responding to you. Good luck.

I disagree with anyone saying don’t get an EHCP if you want independent.
My DS (ASD+dyslexia) goes to an independent school, it’s named on his EHCP, our LA pay for the fees and taxi, the LA are responsible to pay for all provision in section F. I would have paid for the school if my LA hadn’t agreed to name in the EHCP but then I would have had to also pay for all the extra provision needed and driven him everyday - we are much better off with the EHCP naming the school.
DS was in mainstream prior to the independent school and the EHCP wasn’t followed and the 1-1 he was getting wasn’t actually that helpful.

@ChocolateHoneycomb if you are still looking for schools look on the Crested website for dyslexia school as many suit those who also have ASD.

For girls Limpsfield Grange in Surrey is fantastic.

I have a son with autism and he has excelled at a mainstream secondary after really struggling at primary and many teachers told me it was common for high function kids to find secondary much better than primary.

Titsywoo · 04/11/2021 21:33

There are also many mainstream schools with a seperate area for autistic children. Nearish to me this school has an area of the building which is only accessible to children with SEN and they have classrooms/areas to have lunch and hang out/quiet rooms/sensory area etc. Kids can stay there all the time or gradually start to move into the mainstream part of the school. www.oasisacademycoulsdon.org/uploaded/Coulsdon/Academy_Life/Pastoral_Care/O-Zone_brochure.pdf

@Paulbert
I hope things get easier for your son. Is there any help from SENCO at school? They should definitely be aware and able to help.

Arisaig1 · 08/02/2023 07:22

You sound like you need some professional help can you start with your GP?

SENrights · 14/08/2023 17:21
