Single science igcse?

Morning all, I am hoping for some advice about this which my dd’s school has suggested she take.
She is reasonably bright, poor organisational skills due to ASD.
She did a couple of GCSEs early last year and got very high grades (they all do two early at her school).
Her teachers have strongly advised that she do just the core science gcse.
Having done a bit of internet research, this seems very unusual and state schools won’t even allow this.

This is an independent school but I am hoping that this won’t turn in to a debate about that- she is there due to her ASD not being managed in previous schools.

Do any teachers have any thoughts on this? Or parents who have had dc do it?

Thanks in advance .

It's odd they suggest it. It's no longer offered and the exams aren't run anymore. It was last examined in 2017.

The closest thing would be to sit a gcse in one of the three sciences, say, in physics. She would then cover all physics content including the triple content.

The other option is two science GCSEs that combine all three sciences - so each has the content of two thirds of the triple content (roughly).

I don't suppose they're suggesting entry level? That doesn't seem to fit the rest of her profile...

Physics teacher of 7 years - just left teaching.

Thanks for responding physicskate, I have just re checked my emails and it definitely says single award instead of double. I have asked them to call me to clarify.

I know that state schools will no longer offer it but I think edexel do a single IGSCE still and that the independent sector use them.
I might be completely wrong and you would definitely know more than me about it.
I will let you know if anything gets clarified today.
Thanks again.

There is still a single Science option for iGCSE Science but she would be capable of taking the iGCSE version of the Double award/Combined Science.
If the school don't offer this option then taking one iGCSE in a Science subject (her best one) should be possible.

physicskate · 11/09/2018 18:29

Oh yes of course - I'd completely forgotten about iGCSE!!! They are a different kettle of fish in many ways. Some Indies do indeed still do the iGCSE - but not as common as it used to be (I've only worked at Indies and we only used it infrequently).

If she took other GCSEs early and did very well at them, there is no reason to restrict her to core science... Might it be she is taking so many GCSEs that they want to open up time for others?

Cobrider · 11/09/2018 19:33

She isn’t doing that many, I spoke to them today and they are fearful that she might not get a brilliant grade in the double. We have compromised and going to aim for the double but might drop back to single if it’s not looking good. Interesting one though!

A boy at my Dds school has just taken it. He is very low ability academically.

Cobrider · 12/09/2018 11:29

The first entries will be marked in 2019 so I think that must be a different exam again.

doing just core will limit her choices post 16, and iGCSE is not highly thought of, compared to normal GCSE.

Is she likely to want to consider science A levels? if so, she needs to be doing at least combined (2 GCSEs)

AlexanderHamilton · 12/09/2018 11:47

Its very doubtful that a child who has been recommended to only take single science would be doing science A levels.

not if she goes down the single science route no, but lets not forget why its there, the single science route is designed for outstanding linguists who want to take more than 2 foreign languages at GCSE, and continue with these at A level.

Is that your DD? OP?

Cobrider · 12/09/2018 20:15

Eh? No idea about the other post. My dd just got two grade 9s in gcse this year.
I am just trying to work out why the school might be steering her towards one single igcse in science.

I don’t think she would cope with A level sciences no, it’s a shame as she would love to have been an equine physio.
