where do you shop for 13 year old boy clothes?

We have just relocated to London from the US, and I need to take my 13 year old son clothes shopping for the usual casual wear: joggers, hoodies, plain T-shirts, etc—and I realize I have no idea where to go. He has a few Nike/Adidas bits & pieces, but he doesn't need to be decked out in all name-brand gear for basics like sweatpants & t-shirts (and we'd rather not break the bank, of course). Where do you go for boys' clothes? Thanks!

DS is a large 12 year old and has a mix of bits from H&M, TK Maxx, Next, Primark, Gap. He doesn't care about labels, just that it fits and is comfy. He doesn't do jeans though- shorts all year round here!

hugoagogo · 05/09/2018 09:52

H&M, m&s, next, gap, matalan and debenhams all do children's sizes up to 15-16.
Unfortunately they rarely have them in the shops with the exception of m&s and h&m.
It's a tricksy age for clothes.

bodiddly · 05/09/2018 10:05

Most 13 year old boys at the moment only wear joggers/sweat pants when not in school uniform - they rarely wear jeans etc. I buy from JD Sport largely - Nike, Adidas, Sonnetti, Supply and Demand etc - and I buy from Next brands range online in the sale. I used to buy H&M trackies too but he won't wear them any more. You can still find the odd t shirt there though. Most of his t-shirts we bought last year in America from Nike, Converse, Tommy H etc. Sports Direct can be good for cheap joggers and t shirts etc. It is hard to find clothes for this age in store as they are between men and kids. That said, I do buy from Primark - boys section for bottom half and small men's for tops!

Michaelahpurple · 05/09/2018 10:25

Mine dressed fairly traditionally ie not trackpants ans I buy mostly from John Lewis heritage, Zara for trousers, Boden, Ralph Lauren when I can buy in America and so not need a mortgage. Next (online) has some decent stuff for basics if you pick out classics from the more decorated things.

Boden has a good size range right up to 16. Annoyingly quite a lot do the others dry up around bf age 13 boys (mine is quite little still and wearing age 12) with nothing on offer until they are men size small. V boring.

Oh, Uniglo men's xs picks up bigger teens well for plain t shirts etc. Haven't tried their children's yet.

azaleanth90 · 05/09/2018 13:10

Next and H&M both do 13-14 online if not in shops. I have an average skinny child and buy a size ahead in tops but not bottoms, if that helps. We almost never go to actual shops though, do it all online and send back what doesn't work.

rainingcatsanddog · 05/09/2018 15:50

H&M go up to size age 14+ and the men's stuff is reasonably priced.

TonTonMacoute · 05/09/2018 15:58

Another vote for H&M.

gegs73 · 05/09/2018 15:58

TK Maxx is really good for T shirts/jumpers/hoodies etc. Either small men size or larger child's. Also Primark. Jeans/tracksuit bottoms from H&M, Primark again or JD Sports. He also likes skate brands so independent shops though only the t shirts/jumpers fit.

MinaPaws · 05/09/2018 15:59

It's really hard to find good clothes for that age. I guess because they are all different sizes by then.
H&M jeans and chinos are well cut, wear/wash well and very good price. Don't rule out Primark. Their XS and XXS menswear fits teens.
Uniqlo is great too, especially for tees.
For cosy hoodies Hollister sale is brilliant if Holliser isn't uncool now. The trends keep shifting.

Thanks to all for these suggestions. I'm planning a trip to Oxford Street—and to leave space in my suitcase for next time I'm returning from the States.

Just recently discovered M and M direct. They have all the above mentioned brands plus more and the discounts are brilliant.

LittleSpace · 05/09/2018 18:55

Next is great for teenage boys clothes.

loubluee · 05/09/2018 23:09

My 13 year son is big for his age, 34/34 jeans, Large & X Large tops as his shoulders are so wide (proper rugby player stamp) so we shop in he following:- M&M Direct, Just Hype, Sonetti, Gap, Debenhams, John Lewis, New Look, Top Man, River Island.

MeetOnTheLedge · 05/09/2018 23:26

Gap, H&M, Sports Direct, Primark. It's really frustrating that Next only go up to age 12 in shops, just as they get old enough to start shopping more independently there's nothing available - we never do clothes shopping online, going to the shops is so much easier.

LittleSpace · 06/09/2018 08:07

Go to the Men's section in Next as they have small sizes which fit tall thin teenage boys.

MeetOnTheLedge · 06/09/2018 11:35

Mine's very short and very slim, I doubt he'd fit even the smallest men's sizes yet, but I'll look next time I'm in, thanks.

Plutonium · 06/09/2018 13:32

Meet - Mines very short 5ft 2 and skinny as well, infact shortest and slimmest in his year. Pls check m and m direct link above. (All the size 28 tourers fit him including the kids sizes 14-15). Also, Primark men’s XS and Topshop XS all fit just fine.

Plutonium · 06/09/2018 13:33

Correction “Trousers”.

MeetOnTheLedge · 06/09/2018 13:44

Well, we don't do online shopping for clothes, they never fit and it's such a faff waiting for them, sending them back etc, so we won't be able to use M&M, but I will look in Primark, Topshop etc. He's still under 5' though so I think we might have to wait a bit longer for mens sizes.

averythinline · 06/09/2018 17:38

my ds is tall and v slim - his current favourite that is in budget is

Uniqlo - their stuff is cut well usually and indestructible - they wash really well as well....the manga tshirts have gone down very well

otherwise H&M, but sizing inconsistent, Topman
odd bit of matalan they are better online for availability,

  • most sportswear brands are too wide in the waist for height..so I haunt TKMaxx
Converse for branded Gap ?
averythinline · 06/09/2018 17:39

H&M and Uniqlo kds maybe some use...also for sports wear -Decathlon are great

Twofishfingers · 06/09/2018 17:43

We just buy jeans and jogging bottoms from Primark (jeans from adult section, the slim fit are perfect fit for tall 13 year old!). H&M don't seem to have his size, and two of my local Next don't even have stock older boys' clothes.

We get tops from Sports Direct (Nike, Adidas), a couple of tops from Hype, and the rest is just plain t-shirts also from Primark.

ShalomJackie · 06/09/2018 19:03

Zara, Hollister, Primark, H&M.

Bibstersgirl · 06/09/2018 19:05

M and M direct are great. Jack Jones has good t shirt offers. Superdry and Next too.
