GCSE English Lang remark - AQA - advice please

My ds is really disappointed with his results. His target was 8, he was regularly achieving 7s in mock etc, put in a lot of revision over Easter and came out with a 5. He can't understand what happened and nor can I! School have advised he is right on the boundary (i.e. just squeaked a 5) so are advising against a remark although they will get the paper back. I'm sure enough that something has gone wrong to wonder if a clerical check would be worth it just in case there was a processing mistake? Does anyone has experience with this?

Look at Rosie’s post on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/3340622-How-does-GCSE-remarking-work-Calling-out-to-Noble-Giraffe-all-teachers-exam-markers-and-experienced-parents-Love-to-create-definitive-guide-for-all

She says that AQA teachers can view the marks per question for free so if you ask the school to do this they’d be able to tell if something had gone hideously wrong like he got zero marks for a page of questions. Might be worth doing before asking the exam board to do anything that could potentially lower his grade.

That is really helpful, thank you so much. He answered everything so a 0 would definitely be worth looking into!

Still waiting to hear from school
He tells me he may have forgotten to add his candidate number to one of the papers ....would that mean he's utterly screwed?

The same thing happened to the daughter of a colleague of mine.
She achieved top grades in all subjects apart from AQA English Language in which she also achieved a 5 despite being predicted an 8
I don’t trust English Language marking tbh.
It’s all ver subjective imho

Mrskeats · 03/09/2018 21:37

A couple of my students got iffy marks on language.

Interesting. He doesn't take the rest til next year - I've been worried they all might be dire given that this is his strongest subject and he worked at it. Once I get the marks breakdown I'll feel a bit better.

When scripts are collated by the exams officer before being sent to the exam board, the details are checked against the attendance registers and any mistakes are corrected.

Is that a year 10 entry for GCSE English Language????

neddle · 04/09/2018 10:56

We’re looking to get dd’s remarked. She scored 72 which puts her at a 4 but she needs a 6 to be able to do media studies for a level.
The school will probably let her do it if she manages to get it to a 5, so we’re going to give it a try.
Her predicted grades were all spot on except English Lang and lit. Predicted 7s but got 4s in both.

catslife · 04/09/2018 11:16

But surely grade predictions are only accurate if pupils take the exam in Y11 and a lower grade would be expected for Y10s.

For English Language exams pupils have to use Answer books which means that the candidates need to follow the instructions on the question paper carefully.
A zero for one question (or part question) could be because the candidate missed off the question numbers rather than that the examiner made an error iyswim.

Sorry, but it is ridiculous (and very counter to what Ofsted wants...) to enter students in year 10 for English Language! Lit used to be quite commonplace (generally for middle ability children) but is becoming less of a thing. Langauge : well, that's just all kinds of odd....

And - unfortunately - your DS's case illustrates why.
