GCSE Results Collection

Obviously results day is looming (yikes!) Are you planning on going with your DC to collect their results or have you done so in the past with older DC?

My DS hasn't mentioned yet whether he wants to go on his own or wants us (ie me and his Dad) to go with him. He will probably make up his mind when his mates make up theirs Confused Grin As he is my eldest I'm not sure what the "done thing" is.

I know he wants to physically go in and collect the results from school but I'm not sure whether parents usually attend too or whether it's just the DC. I really want to support him (especially as he needs excellent grades to stay on at his school for sixth form) so would like to be around in case we need to speak to school staff etc (hopefully we won't but you never know) but equally I don't want to embarrass him either by being the only pushy? parent there!

All advice gratefully received Smile

DD1 had hers last year - she wanted us to go in with her but stand off to one side while she opened the envelope. There were a lot of parents there.

It's DD2's turn next year, and DD1's for A-levels and I will just go with what they want then (there isn't an us anymore, sadly).

I will need to provide transport. I hope I'll be allowed to lurk outside, as it's too hot to wait in the car (assuming this weather continues).

Aragog · 07/08/2018 13:29

celtiethree DD would much prefer that. Unfortunately that isn't an option here.

hidingmystatus · 07/08/2018 14:20

Our school provides a website link to pupils and, a little later, opens it for parents. I find it a little odd that all schools don't give the e-mail/link option at least to pupils!

celtiethree · 07/08/2018 15:27

Well the Scottish txt service worked well. Both DC had their results a few minutes after 8, followed up by the postman about 12. Both DC happy, onto next year!

WhatHaveIFound · 07/08/2018 15:31

I will log into the school parent portal to get DD's results. They're normally on by 6/6.30am or at least they were last year.

DD is doing NCS so she won't be home until lunchtime on results day so i'll text her as soon as i know.

Cauliflowersqueeze · 07/08/2018 15:54

I’m really surprised they are on the parent portal.

In the schools I’ve worked at the results are only given to the students in person and only given to someone else if the student gives written permission.

TeenTimesTwo · 07/08/2018 16:23

DD walked in alone. I gave her strict instructions what to say when she phoned, as she is hopeless at summarising things. Instructions were to say 'I passed everything' or 'I failed Eng Lang but passed everything else' .

cubscout · 07/08/2018 17:51

I will wait outside in case of any disasters but ds is clear he wants to go in alone.

The school will upload to the parent portal in the afternoon.

LoniceraJaponica · 07/08/2018 19:41

Why do some schools put them online, but most don't?
DD's school is very strict about not emailing/texting/putting them on the portal.

Stickerrocks · 07/08/2018 20:43

DD's school expects them to collect them in person between 11-12. They can be posted in an SAE or someone else pre-authorised can come & collect them on the day. They have to wait until the school re-opens in September if they miss it.

WhatHaveIFound · 08/08/2018 10:00

Cauliflowersqueeze It's a boarding school (DD is a day pupil). Maybe that's why they're on the Parent Portal?

Cauliflowersqueeze · 08/08/2018 10:12

Maybe - I would have thought they would have sent it to your dd’s email account instead. Anyway.

BackforGood · 08/08/2018 17:13

ds - went off on his own then disappeared off grid for a few hours . Didn't cross his mind apparently that I would be waiting on tenterhooks!

dd1 - we took her (she was hoping for a 6th form place elsewhere and we were taking her directly to that 6th form once she go them, then going for breakfast together to sit and talk through her options). Was really surprised she said we could come in with her. Also surprised there were quite a few other parents there.

dd2 - not discussed yet. I suspect we will take her, as, like dd1, she needs to decide which 6th form to plump for so will probably go out for breakfast to listen to her and prod her into making her mind up. I strongly suspect we will wait in the car outside with her though Wink

WhatHaveIFound · 09/08/2018 08:27

Cauliflowersqueeze - hopefully they will as i'd rather she knew first. It's slightly complicated as DD has a school issue email address but might not have access to it any more as she is leaving for 6th Form.

I will be so glad when it's it's all over!

pacer142 · 09/08/2018 09:38

Does everyone in England have to go to their school or college?

No, my son's school put them on their website at 8am in the morning. I'm first up and awake so I'll know before DS wakes up. No need to go into school at all, but I know most of them will be doing just to meet up and socialise for a while.

pacer142 · 09/08/2018 09:42

Why do some schools put them online, but most don't?

Because there's simply no consistency/standardisation of schools which is probably 95% of the educational problems were are suffering today. Each school does it's own thing, so will depend on the mix/experience/attitudes of the governors. Publication of results is no different to variations in uniform, homework policies, subjects offered, etc - the whole system is a hotch-potch of ideologies and the children are the ones who suffer.

NancyJoan · 10/08/2018 20:59

@WhatHaveIFound Our students stay on the system for emails etc until 31st Aug. Hopefully yours will be the same.

WhatHaveIFound · 11/08/2018 09:49

That would be perfect for us. I'd rather she knew before us.
