What do they need for the first couple of days?

There hasn't been a list or anything from the school, so I'm guessing couple of pens, ruler, couple of pencils, rubber and sharpener?

OP posts:
OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 02/08/2018 21:59

Yep, all those. Maybe some coloured pencils. Top tip-buy a big pack of the pens they like, maybe a couple of spare rulers, rubbers sharpener etc and keep them at home for when they get lost. A sharpie so you can write their name on everything. No tippex.

topcat2014 · 02/08/2018 22:00

And remember - shops will still be open..

DD goes to year 7 too, so watching

MaddieElla · 02/08/2018 22:15

Maths set (compass, protractor, set square etc.

Scientific calculator

Not necessarily needed straight away, but they might be.

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 02/08/2018 22:19

Highlighters.
Red & green pens as well as black/Blue
Glue stick

TwinkleMerrick · 02/08/2018 22:34

That's terrible, usually schools give out a list. I know I'm a teacher!!

All of what you said plus a calculator. Maybe get a scientific one as they will
Need it later on. Also P.E kit, they prob won't need it the first day back as a lot of time is spent with form tutors but defo by the second day. They should get a timetable so you will be able to help pack their bag the night before. Put names on everything, yr7 student lose everything! Takes them a while to find their feet when moving around school a lot.

YodelOdel · 02/08/2018 22:47

Both my sons have 2 pencil cases, an every day one and a specialist equipment one. They live in their school bags, we have extras of everything at home so they are never without their equipment.

In the every day, 2 black pens, 2 mechanical pencils so no sharpening required, but the regulatory pencil sharpener. Green biro (green for growth for extension work) purple pen (independent work) ruler -bendy so no arsehole can snap it, pritt stick, highlighters x 2.

In specialist pencil case, calculator - usually told by school as to which brand to use, compass, protractor, coloured pencils, spare black/green/purple pens and mechanical pencil leads. Because children nick stuff and you get a negative for failing to have all the necessary equipment.

School provide a white board pen & the green and purple pens but they are awful quality.

They will be told all this on their first day in class. But find a pen they like and buy in bulk.

flaggerblasted · 02/08/2018 22:49

Oh god, sorry I'm going to have to correct your spelling 🤣

flaggerblasted · 02/08/2018 22:50

Oops pressed post too fast! It's stationery- e for envelope! Not stationary which is standing still!

clary · 02/08/2018 23:14

I love year 7s, they have their own glue stick ❤️

yy to all that's said here, lots of pens tho as they all mysteriously "explode" within the first two lessons. Now I am not a teacher any more I have used the same pen for six months 😃

MarchingFrogs · 03/08/2018 00:04

'Everyday' pen-wise, ours like the Zebra retractable ones -Tesco have them at £3 for a pack of ten at the moment, I think.

DD's previous school specified particular colours of highlighter.

Definitely stock up on glue sticks.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 03/08/2018 05:17

Please, please, please don't buy clicky pens. Because-well they click. (And they love dismantling them) My mate at school bought some "unexplodable" pens, I want to say they are squish, or splat, that frustrates them. Grin
Oh yes, please label every single thing you can. Before we broke up I sorted lost property. 4 bags of clothes. 2 of pe kit, brand new style in September. The other containing virtually new Nike and adidas trainers. Three high end branded sports jackets. Two hype bags and a girls Barber jacket.

reluctantbrit · 03/08/2018 08:27

We got on DD’s list
Pair of compasses
Scientific calculator, down to the model they prefer
Protector
Ruler
Pencils
Writing pen
Purple and green pen
Whiteboard pen
Colouring pencils, no felt tip
Sharpener
Rubber
Glue sticks

I got everything either twice or in such a large number I have a full set at home because I know we will loose stuff.

We also had to order via the school an art kit and will get additional requirements from the subject teachers for items when they have their first lesson.

mmzz · 03/08/2018 09:01

Glue sticks are an essential, as are colouring pencils. A pair of scissors helps (so many worksheets to cut and glue in). Maybe also a 4B pencil for art and a fine liner pen. The school probably has a particular scientific calculator that it recommends.

A water bottle.

Also a couple of rolls of sticky back plastic for covering books. You will be doing a lot of that for the first couple of weeks.

Nanasueathome · 03/08/2018 09:03

Thank you flaggerblasted

RedSkyLastNight · 03/08/2018 10:54

Others have covered it all I think.

I will reiterate they need lots of glue sticks.
I would check about sticky backed plastic (no book backing going on here).

It's also useful to keep a set of everything at home so that their school "stuff" can just stay in the school pencil case/plastic wallet.

Also stock up on printer paper and ink (if you have a printer at home).

Highlights12 · 03/08/2018 17:17

Don't know If they still cover books but when mine where at school I bought clear covers from stationery shop, far better than the wallpaper we used when I was at school. Also made sure they had 2 ties in case one lost when changing from p.e.

Quadrangle · 03/08/2018 17:21

If you type in the name of the school and "handbook" there might be a list in there if your school has one. We were given one and it was in there but you can download a copy from the school website

Toadsrevisited · 03/08/2018 17:33

Glue stick
Name stickers/ name written in permanent marker on important stuff like ruler
Spares in locker in another pencil case along with spare dinner money and sanpro
and tights as applicable
My fave Yr 7s have their own little stapler!

Toadsrevisited · 03/08/2018 17:36

Big box at home to keep exercise books at weekend so they don't get lost
Copy their timetable and keep it on the fridge (I always do this for my tutor group. Will miss that little ritual whilst on mat leave!)

Flyingarcher · 03/08/2018 17:55

They will lose a lot of it. Scientific calculator x 2 (one for home, one for school)

Glu sticks are a must.

Coloured pencils.

Please not some gigantic sodding pencil case that takes up half the desk and has squillions of zips and pockets and crap in it. There is no room and they have to carry everything round and some of the p3ncil cases are nearly as big as the child! We have some kids that have two and then lay everthing on the table and then have no room. Label everything you don't want to lose like the calculator. Value stuff is fine for everything else - it will get lost, lent, stolen.

Flyingarcher · 03/08/2018 18:00

Also list on front door or fridge of what they need to remember before they leave

  1. What week it is (A or B)
  2. Have got books for today's lessons?
  3. Have got today's homework?
  4. Travel pass
  5. Lunch
  6. PE kit?
  7. Key

Also. Top tip. Don't cover the exercise books in the same paper. Differentiate each one. If using sticky see through (get a roll coz it has to be done each year), put a coloured sticker on the spine and also on the front in big, the subject or a picture to do with the subject. That way they can't mistakenly take the wrong book for History, say, because Science is a green exercise book too.

mmzz · 03/08/2018 18:04

DS has managed 5 years without losing his calculator. However, he has lost his football boots, one PE sock, a school tie and his PE shorts.
Also he has broken more rulers, compasses and protractors than I care to remember.

My DC found labelled things embarrassing after a while - its too primary school. The only exception is clothes and PE kit bags which they are happy to have labelled to stop arguments in the changing rooms.

wagswags · 03/08/2018 20:48

Frixion Erasable pens and highlighters seems very popular in my son's school, usually costs £7 for a pack of 3 in Tesco and Sainsbury's. Found an ebay seller " hokejist76 " who sells different frixion bundles / joblots / sets really cheap, and i stock up from that seller. Way cheaper than buying from supermarket. Mechanical pencils are a must. Bought from the same seller too.

Leeds2 · 03/08/2018 21:01

I would get some sticky back plastic. Remember DD having a couple of homework where she had to back her exercise books.

Cachailleacha · 04/08/2018 13:24

If your child likes to destroy and lose things, then buy extras of what you know they'll need now when it's on sale. Such as two maths sets, then when the set squares get 'accidentally' snapped, you have replacements.
