Uppingham. Their art department is stunning. Purely full boarding so you won't get the weekend exodus .

m0therofdragons · 20/07/2018 21:12

Sherborne Girls is lovely for boarders and very arts focused. New facilities currently being built.

ReservoirDogs · 21/07/2018 00:04

Kings Ely has a very well regarded textiles and art dept. 1 hour from Kings Cross,London by train

dalbitsori · 21/07/2018 05:01

Actually, I was originally planning on going to a girls school but changed my mind. Whats special about girls schools?

Does Bryanston not have school uniforms for sixth form students?

Do your parents have any say in this?

VanillaSugar · 21/07/2018 11:32

And when are you planning to go? This September? Because if you are, the schools might be full.

Bethany School in Kent. You can do 3 art A levels (eg Art, Textiles, Photography) and can also work towards the Artsmark Award. They specialise in supporting students with dyslexia, but have many students without any additional needs.

Next September after my IGCSEs

My daughter did an extended diploma in art at Leeds College of Art before going on to study fine art at university. You can specialise in textiles and it's a two year course with the advantage that you then don't have to do a foundation course. It's not a boarding school as such, but students came from all over the country and abroad, and the college helps with accommodation. It has an excellent reputation, and every student went on to do art at higher education level.

Girls schools tend to focus on developing young women to take their place in the world regardless of men! However there’s no right or wrong. Some of the schools mentioned on this thread are a long way from London and very much in the countryside so think hard about this. Do you want to be stuck at Uppingham or in Lincolnshire or Wiltshire when you could be near to London. Schools like Heathfield let girls go out to London regularly. It’s far better for galleries and inspiration. I think location matters and you certainly need a school that knows it’s way around art schools and champions art within the school.

Wellington College (co-ed day and boarding school) in Berkshire has a very good art/textiles department - it's 30 mins from Heathrow.

NB - be careful not to confuse Wellington College with Wellington School - which is a different school elsewhere.

Mumtofourandnomore · 22/07/2018 21:50

I can also recommend Heathfield in Ascot - it’s a lovely school.

My agency recommended Lancing, Uppingham, Shrewsbury, Bromsgrove and Brighton. What do you guys think? I'm doing the interviews for these schools next month.

Uppingham has a really great art department - highly recommend.

milkysmum · 23/07/2018 05:23

What do your parents think?

dalbitsori · 23/07/2018 05:33

A lot of schools require Ukiset and i heard that its a very complicated test.

VanillaSugar · 23/07/2018 06:02

I'll say Uppingham (again).

Which country are you in?

dalbitsori · 23/07/2018 06:12

Im studying in Hong Kong

Ukiset doesn't look so complicated. There are samples online and it covers verbal reasoning, non verbal reasoning, maths and english comprehension, all of which are standard entry tests in independent schools. At least it is a universal test rather than needing to prepare for several individual ones. I wonder how broad a selection these agents really cover, the same suggestions seem to come up whatever the circumstances Hmm

mumwah · 23/07/2018 07:31

Are you an Expat. If so you may want to factor it into your choice. Lancing no idea. Uppingham no idea about Art but full boarding so lots of people at the weekend for company. Shrewsbury also full boarding so plenty going on. Bromsgrove v good arts and textiles. Not full boarding but plenty stay in over weekend, no exeats so always open and lots of expats when I knew it. Great Sixth Form boarding house. If it's Brighton College seems v academic don't know if this extends to or hinders the Arts. Not full boarding.

CherryPavlova · 23/07/2018 07:34

Brighton College or Wellington. Bedales is slightly more bohemian, so might suit better.

VanillaSugar · 23/07/2018 09:06

Ok, my daughter was at parsing school in Yorkshire and shared a room with a girl from Hong Kong. There are a few things to need to look into:

  1. Holidays - you need time to go home. A one week half term is not long enough for you to go home and come back. You'll spend that time with your guardian. Oakham School has a 2 week October half term and I'll look into Uppingham for you (probably the same). Oundle School is alsoin the same area so I'll look into that.

  2. Travel - my daughter said that the overseas children all caught taxis directly to the airport even if it was 200 miles away. Don't be limited to London.

  3. Find the art school of your choice , i.e. Glasgow, Slade (part of UCL) and then go back to the schools. The schools will have a list of leavers destinations so you can as the admissions team how many children want to art school and where they went. This will help you to make a short list.

VanillaSugar · 23/07/2018 09:20

Have checked and both Oundle and Uppingham have two week half tem holidays (13-28 October) so you'll be able to go home. You'll probably want to after your first 6 weeks away.

How is your English? Are you reading this fluently or are you using Google translate? Again, you might want to look at schools that are used to looking after Chinese children do ask the admissions people / registrar how they will look after you.

I really would look at Uppingham as it has a girl's boarding house specifically for girls who join the school for sixth form. Otherwise, you will be looking at joining existing friendship groups.

VanillaSugar · 23/07/2018 09:22

Not "parsing" school but boarding school Blush
