Luggage for boarding school?

DD is 16 and heading off to boarding school for sixth form and were unsure about what luggage she should take for all her stuff. In my day we had trunks, but from what I've read/heard from my niece and nephew most children use suitcases. Irritatingly the school kit list doesn't specify (international school with students from lots of different social and financial backgrounds) so I'm assuming it's a case of being what you've got. Anybody got any advice? It's been over 30 years since I last was at boarding school Blush

Our school says NOT trunks - too hard to store. We use suitcases and soft bags.

Soft holdalls are much easier - with plenty of spare room for what they accumulate over time

Soft holdalls/gym bags here as trunks are not allowed die to storage issues!

soft bags and laundry style bags are used in ds's school. Also something sturdy to bring books and folders home in.

Don't bother with trunks. I have DSs trunk stuck in garage now after him finishing a couple of weeks ago and DDs trunk cluttering up the spare room.
Soft suitcases are best and the boarding house should have room to store those. As per previous poster, she will need a sturdy bag for bringing books home for revision times.

And a hold-all for weekend exeats

Though DD seems to manage with a back pack!

We mainly use soft hold-all bags but recently invested in 2 enormous Sports Direct hold-alls as they hold loads and are cheap so it doesn't matter if they get a bit battered about in storage. Daughter only brings home a small hold-all for exeats. Girls generally, in my experience, have loads more than boys. We had throws and cushions and fairy lights and pot plant holders and fairy lights and, oh did I say, fairy lights! Then there's the amount of toiletries too!
Son's boarding school banned trunks due to the difficulty getting them up and down the ancient narrow staircases and they were causing too much damage to the walls and staircases.

Definitely no room for trunks at Dds school. Small suitcase only (allowances for international students)

Dds school is full of kids whose parents never thought they’d be sending their child to a boarding school though. Most puke stuff in the boot of their car & carry them in bags/holdalls.

Eldest DD at CLC and collapsible cases de rigeur. So much easier. Be minimal. Celebrate fact she is going to a decent school. Fantastic post OP
