Just that really. Is 60% a D?

No for GCSES its numbers now but it really depends on how everyone else does - they move the grade boundaries each year . Ds is still only in Year 8 so can't help beyond that I'm afraid

Trumpetboysmum · 04/07/2018 16:35

But I think 60% is usually more than a d

DS is in Y 7 but they only use the number system for upper school. His end of year exams are coming out in dribs and drabs so I'm just trying to anticipate what he'll get in his report (in which they use ABCDE).

In y7 it could be anything depending on how the school does exams.

Last year's GCSE maths required only 17% I think in the higher tier paper to get a pass grade (4 = old low C).

You would be better off asking him for the highest, lowest and mean in his class. But even then that doesn't necessarily tell you much.

My DD1 got 60% in one subject and I was told it was equivalent to a grade 6/7 (borderline)

MsAwesomeDragon · 04/07/2018 19:02

Well in maths in my school 60% in the test set 1 and 2 do would be about in line to achieve a 7 or higher at GCSE in year 11 (obviously lots can change before year 11!). In the test that's done by sets 3,4,5 then 60% would be in line for a grade 5/6 ish by year 11.

So it depends what the test was!!! That score on en easy test is very different to that score on a harder test. The only way to know is to talk to the school, who will probably say to wait for the report, which will be issued in the next couple of weeks.

FiveMoreMinutesPlease · 04/07/2018 19:40

That's all really helpful - thank you.
He is in set 3 so looking like a 5/6.

Five No! You really cannot draw that conclusion! You have no idea what level the questions were set at, or perhaps even whether he had the same test as set 1. Stop trying to second guess. Ask the teacher or wait for the report.

FiveMoreMinutesPlease · 04/07/2018 19:57

Teen, you're right. I will wait for the report. I just wanted a general idea
for my own curiosity whilst I wait.

Five I am with you there. DD got ~40% for one of her recent y8 tests. I wasn't sure what to think but then the teacher rang about something else and said it was a good score (for her) as the same test had also been given to the top set. Our reports only come out on the penultimate day of term too, so 3 weeks to wait!

Fingers crossed 🤞
