Are they actually important? Do they have any bearing on the final GCSE results? Are they used to gauge which tier a Year 11 pupil sits their exams next year? Or are they just used by teachers as prep for the actual GCSE’s?

My ds is sitting his year 10 exams at the moment.

For him they provide tge first experience of sitting in the gym under formal exam conditions and having an exam timetable (they are off timetable all week and are revising when not in an exam).

I guess they provide a snapshot of where they are now. He has realised that for his GCSEs he needs to start well in advance and that he needs to work extra hard at Chemistry as it doesn’t come as naturally to him.

For tge school I guess they give an indication as to who is / isn’t on target. He is at a selective school so they all do higher tier.

For me I hope it teaches him how to plan revision properly and learn from anything which doesn’t go to plan.

I would say they are important in exactly the same way we build muscle memory with sport the more times you (actively) revise something the better.

Also how to revise is a skill which needs to be learnt.
