ACS School Cobham- What's it like?

I like the idea of an international school for my son aged 12. Does anyone have experience of ACS Cobham? I had read on an old Mumsnet thread that said the kids who aren't super wealthy are made to feel left out/get less attention(!) Anyone know what the culture is there?

Please can you let me know if you found out anything Re the SEN program at ACS. I’m considering the same for my son TIA.

Hi. I have a friend who daughter as ASD and she attends this school in middle school part. She said that they do not have onsite educational psychologists etc and parents need to source assessments privately or via the local authority. SEN support is OK.

Thank you for your reply. Thats interesting. I guess on-site SEN support is available but not necessarily the annual testing and assessment that other schools might have access to.

Could you please let me know what exactly you mean? I have been looking at ACS Cobham for my 8 year old who is currently at Hampton Prep and has an assured place in Hampton Senior School. However we would like him to go to University in the US so we were considering IB. Any advice on this matter would be extremely helpful. Many thanks in advance!

@Flowerbloom9 , stick with Hampton and move your ds to Kings Wimbledon for sixth form if you really want IB. It's crazy to give up the option of gcses when you are currently in an extremely good and academic prep system.

@redrobin75 - Thanks a lot for letting me know but I keep thinking maybe DS will get more exposure to the American system and can take advantage of Uni placements through ACS. Would you be able to advice on this?

redrobin75 · 16/09/2023 13:42

@Flowerbloom9 , sorry no, the dc I know at ACS are there because they aren't suited to a traditional educational system, not anything to do with US universities.
Have you looked at the U.K. schools locally sending dc to US universities? Off the top of my head I know dd going to Stanford, Princeton and Yale on sports scholarships this year from surbtion high, reeds, Kingston grammar and St Richard Reynolds college in twickenham.
1 of my family has gone to a college in California for a self funded course with 3 x A's at A level.
You could always try for Kings Wimbledon at 11 instead of Hampton school so you have the guaranteed option of IB. Their North American destination list is impressive and will no doubt be strengthened in the next 10 years

@redrobin75 Thanks a lot. I just wanted to know if there are any advantages of going for an American curriculum vs British curriculum if the DC is not going to apply to British Universities.

tennissquare · 18/09/2023 17:10

@Flowerbloom9 , I would start a new thread in the higher education section and ask as lots of posters have dc at uni in America.
But you need to clearly state if you are hoping for a sports scholarship (which is quite achievable for hockey and rowing if you play/ row at a high level whilst at school) or if you are planning to finance the degree in America yourself (in which case there are agencies that guide you or in the case of somewhere like Brighton College they will guide you with their in-house US uni expert).
