Any views on Reigate College or Collyer's, please?

Ds is in year 10, and has decided that he definitely doesn't want to stay on at his current school for 6th form. He has his eye on either of these as possible options for A levels, and we will be visiting on the upcoming open evenings, but I thought I'd consult the MN oracles as well Grin

Reigate is nearer to us and would be much more convenient but I get the impression that it is harder to get into than Collyer's (could be wrong though)?

Ds's A-level choices would be Spanish, History and then probably either English or Politics. He's not had predicted grades yet but once he gets his arse into gear realistically I would expect him to hit the subject targets (eg level 6 for Spanish, level 5 for History/English) very easily (and hopefully go past them but, teenage boys Hmm)

Any views, experiences or recommendations very welcome!

I went to Collyers (but a while ago!), no complaints at all, they will have specialist teachers as just teach A Levels etc, it is quite laid back though, I went off the rails a bit and it wasn't really picked up on.

No idea about Reigate to compare though?!

Thanks sd - we went to a Collyer's open evening last week and I agree the main feeling I got was that it was quite laidback Smile. It was a nice atmosphere, with friendly, enthusiastic staff, but I would worry that ds (who has a tendency to extreme laziness) might coast a bit. I expect we'll put in a application though, as he did really like it.

Does anyone else have thoughts on either college?

I would check out the class sizes at Reigate. They are Outstanding and get great results, but some of my son's friends chose to go there rather than stay on at school sixth forms and have been really frustrated by how many students are packed in, lecture style in some cases.

I went to Collyer's (a while back) and really enjoyed it. It's laidback as others said but I think it's good prep for uni where you're left to get on with it and recognise when you need support or help. I went to Millais School which spoon-fed everyone so it was a bit of a shock the first term but settled after that. English was good but depending on tutor. Politics was very popular when I went- not sure what it's like now. Friend's son just finished his first year at Collyer's and loves the independence it's given him.
