When We Two Parted mmzz - in fact my dcs didn't know that very well..although ds2 did learn the "grin of bitterness" off by heart..Hmm I think it is a random whether one poem was learnt by a group of students any better than another, as long as it wasn't Ozymandias. We thought Singh Song wouldn't come up because it was a bit inappropriate (the chutney putney bit) Grin but the dcs seemed to remember it for those bits Blush I suppose that's what you get for studying Love and Relationships..

I had similar worries about calculators. And protractors (dd lost hers at last minute last night, then she found it) and pencils in compasses being wrong size...leads breaking...spectacles not being the right prescription for fine work...and me not having noticed...(very random that one) Only an hour to go and it will be over until the next Maths exam, thank the Lord.

My DC have been in some of those exams with real whoppers eg wrong formula type thing so I do have sympathy with current parents at the back end of exam booboos. I find it amazing they happen, and not acceptable. These are big money organisations, not tin pot outfits run from a shed.

On the marking front (no disrepect Loose!) one of my DS's papers was so incredibly poorly marked (as in a question literally not marked and then not marked again on a supposed re-mark) that our HT sent it to Michael Gove with a strong complaint. Grovelling letter came back from the exam board complete with the A* but not to even glance at a paper sent in by a school for a re-mark, having taken the money - Shock

Basically, stuff happens!

goodbyestranger · 07/06/2018 10:08

Hope you get re-assuring news soon Alexander.

Nettleskeins · 07/06/2018 10:08

that was so thoughtful of your dh Alexander

Nettleskeins · 07/06/2018 10:11

Apparently all the Edexcel papers can be seen by the school online or is that the markers, so it is easier for the school to check whether it has been wrongly marked, if it comes to that, whereas the other boards do keep them in a shed warehouse somewhere.

hmcAsWas · 07/06/2018 10:13

goodbyestranger - how did you find out that a question had not been marked? Do you get to see your dc's exam script? Horrified that (hopefully a very few) markers can be so blasé about marking something that can determine someone's future

hmcAsWas · 07/06/2018 10:14

Oh, just seen Nettles post which answers my Q

TheThirdOfHerName · 07/06/2018 10:14

You can apply to have the marking reviewed, but as DSs' school there's a fee for this.

Nettleskeins · 07/06/2018 10:16

I think the problem lies in that the A* students tend to notice when the paper has been marked wrongly whereas the borderline or lower grade students wouldn't necessarily question that they had a C instead of a B. still I think it is life lesson to endure the consequences of a mistake, and to learn that a C instead of B is not the end of the world, or a B instead of an A. If the school has a Sixth Form they will tend to take them for A level on their general record and predicted grade even if there is a shock result. Certainly ds's school were quite flexible in that respect, possibly because they understood the level of sloppiness that was occurring in a small proportion of Gsce marking

Nettleskeins · 07/06/2018 10:20

yes, there is a fee for remarks, but if a whole cohort had problems, school would tend to ask for the entire batch to be reviewed and to see scripts (as I say easier if it is online like Edexcel) Btw I'm not a teacher nor do I work in a school but I have applied for a few remarks of gsces in my time and overheard or was told various things along these lines both from exam officers and other parents. It is all a bit Chinese whispers.

KittiesInsane · 07/06/2018 10:21

spectacles not being the right prescription for fine work and me not having noticed

I didn't realise DD no longer had a spare pair of glasses till she broke her only pair on the first exam day.

Superglue to the rescue.

goodbyestranger · 07/06/2018 10:22

hmc yes exactly. The grade was not what was expected so a re-mark and photocopy was requested. The overall mark didn't change on the re-mark but it was possible to see that no mark had been given for one question by the original examiner and that hadn't been picked up by the second examiner - because the answer given was completely correct. We can only assume both examiners were the sort of examiners who mark in the pub! Anyhow, it was all sorted - but it makes one cynical!

goodbyestranger · 07/06/2018 10:26

Nettleskeins a whole cohort's papers get re-marked for coursework or for across the board low marks in an exam but our school also queries students where individual grades are obviously out of kilter with a student's predictions, and it pays. Parents have the option of requesting a re-mark, provided the HoD signs it off.

goodbyestranger · 07/06/2018 10:28

Sorry, cross posts. Yes the school passed me the photocopy so I saw the blank column myself.

goodbyestranger · 07/06/2018 10:30

That should have read: queries marks (not students!).

hmcAsWas · 07/06/2018 10:31

Thing is Nettleskeins - that might be the case when you are progressing to sixth form in the same school, but for many students in this part of Hampshire there is no sixth form at school so you need to go to a new institution who isn't familiar with the student, and might be less flexible with a 5 when a 6 is needed. Anyway I'll not worry in the interim - and since it is maths I am concerned about its good to know that the Edexcel marked paper can by viewed by her current school online should the need arise

hmcAsWas · 07/06/2018 10:32

You're school sounds very on top of this kind of scenario goodbye

hmcAsWas · 07/06/2018 10:33

'Your' Blush

brainmelt · 07/06/2018 10:41

alexander my DH had a ministroke years ago and he's perfectly fine, absolutely no trace left. He had tingling in one arm and remembers a migraine episode just as it happened. Just want to say that if it turns out to be a ministroke he can recover from it 100% Flowers

Wonderwine · 07/06/2018 10:44

Alexander - I hope your DH is OK and recovers quickly Flowers

hmcAsWas - the more I learn about the whole GCSE process- the question-setting (wrong questions, badly worded questions etc), the control of papers (& leaks) and the marking /review process, the more I become convinced they are basically a useless tool and indicator of very much.
Most of the exam boards seem to struggle to recruit markers as they pay rather poorly and most teachers prefer to have their summer holidays! I've also seen some recruitment ads for markers where the criteria is very low or rather vague e.g. have taught in the last three years, but not necessarily the relevant syllabus Hmm

I'm so sad that our young people invest so much of their time into these exams and then are not even given the respect of a well-managed and fair process Sad.
Interestingly, the Head of DS's (independent) school has, in the last few years, started publicly telling the students that:
a) GCSEs are important, but not the 'be all & end all'
b) You should do your best, but they're not worth making yourself ill over
c) if they go badly it's not the end of your life - there are always resits, A levels and other opportunities to prove yourself in the future.

Unfortunately DS only took away and remembered/repeated the "they're not that important" part of the message Confused Hmm

nicky2512 · 07/06/2018 10:46

I was just wondering if anyone else here is in Northern Ireland with mostly NICCEA exams? DD is doing maths (her least favourite subject) at the minute.

AlexanderHamilton · 07/06/2018 10:53

Thank you for the re-assurances. At the moment we both feel dd is the priority & trying not to worry her until we know more.

TheThirdOfHerName · 07/06/2018 11:06

DS2 is back. He felt that the Edexcel Maths paper 2 was a similar level of difficulty to paper 1.

Sostenueto · 07/06/2018 11:07

Feedback from AQA maths paper 2 was it was alright. Hard but I did my best. By tone of voice not sure if it went well.Sad

Blostma · 07/06/2018 11:10

DD is home and said it was "ok, quite good actually". She's happier with maths than English though, and has decided to have a nap before she does any more revision. Hmm
