How long is your child's commute to school?

Does 8.5 miles and up to 40 mins in bad traffic seem too long?

If you are willing to be the chauffeur then all is well from your DC's point of view I reckon, it would be worse for you then for her. To answer your question DS' commute is 60 min in bus and tube, DD's commute is 20 min by bus. Needless to say DS is not too keen in staying after school for clubs etc but most are are lunchtime, and we are not as involved as parents in his school than we are in the more local one...He loves his school though and is putting a brave face on the commute, but far from ideal. This been said we would probably choose this school again if we would have another boy. If the school is great it is worth it I think.

MinaPaws · 05/06/2018 12:45

8 min walk, 25 min train, 5 min walk other end, so about 40 mins not counting waiting for trains. I thought it owuld be too much but they love it. Morning train to school is like Harry Potterland, they said, even when they were young. Lots of joking around, catching up on homework, sharing snacks. It's part of their social life. And the big ones look out for the little ones.

AgentHannahWells · 05/06/2018 12:48

It takes DC 50-40 mins combo of walking and bus, but for me to drive there in no traffic is about 10mins.

purplegreen99 · 05/06/2018 15:34

If it is you driving OP rather than a bus, can you really commit to that for the next 5-7 years and be sure that your circumstances won't change and you won't need those hours for your own commute?

CookieDoughKid · 05/06/2018 17:06

Depends. Who's driving? I have 30 minute to school via beautiful country roads, no traffic lights and its a pleasure. Plus it's on the way to work roundabout way so commute costs are covered by my work budget.

I would travel a long way to a good school than go to a shit one next door no question.

Titsywoo · 05/06/2018 17:08

0.7 miles so about a 10 min walk (or couple of minutes in car when I drop her)

Derekmorganwasinmybed · 05/06/2018 17:09

25 min walk here

Hideandgo · 05/06/2018 17:09

4 minute drive.

Butkin1 · 08/06/2018 14:07

15 mins by car to local town and then an hour on school's own bus service each way. They soon get used to it - even the little ones..

DD has "bus friends" who listen to music, gossip and study with her. Nicer in the Summer of course..

GahWhatever · 08/06/2018 14:08

my 13YO has a 10 min walk at either end and a 55 minute bus journey.

Enko · 08/06/2018 14:10

Ds and dd3 travels 50 mins for their schools 9 miles away they are not in our closest school that is 8.5 miles away. Children who go there from our town travel 10 min on train and walk 10 mins from station

Bettyfood · 08/06/2018 14:14

10 miles, DD1 gets the bus at 7.40 and arrives about 8.30am. Gets home 4.30pm-4.45pm. Normal in the area. To go to one of the best schools in the country, which she loves, yes I do think it's worth it. She has local friends as well as they organise houses and forms with local kids.

twerkit · 08/06/2018 14:48

Purple green I would commit to it as it's one of the best schools in the country. There is a school coach however which she could take once she's settled in. It would take longer than me driving directly

21 mins in good traffic to a fabulous little rural independent school.

She loves it and it’s worth it

HollyGibney · 08/06/2018 14:52

Five minutes, we can see it from our house. Secondary school will be seven minutes drive. I think we've been very lucky given that we are in a big city. Could have been a lot worse.

HPFA · 08/06/2018 20:52

45 minute bus trip but the bus picks up and drops off virtually outside our front door. Dedicated school bus so I think she just treats it as extra time for socialising.

MoodyMumOfOne · 08/06/2018 21:04

5 minute walk to excellent school
Appreciate we are very lucky.

MollyHuaCha · 09/06/2018 22:19

45 mins here which includes a 20 minute train journey.

gluteustothemaximus · 09/06/2018 22:25

5 minutes bike ride, to the grammar.

He knows he’s very lucky. Many of his classmates come via bus or train.

celtiethree · 09/06/2018 22:27

I used to have an hour commute. I was very proficient at doing all my homework on the school bus. I rarely ever did homework outside school or the bus 😃.

AgentHannahWells · 10/06/2018 08:23

PMSL at people explaining not only their child's journey but the quality of the school. Like a m&s advert. Not just school, a fabulous caring grammar/private school donchaknow Confused

HollyGibney · 10/06/2018 09:24

Ha! I thought that. Ensuring that "The Grammar" is mentioned.

Server05 · 10/06/2018 09:38

15-20 min drive in car to do 7 miles depending on traffic or 2 hours and 3 buses if having to use public transport.

NataliaOsipova · 10/06/2018 09:42

11 miles; probably 30 mins on average. To be honest, if you have to get the car out and go more than about 5 minutes away, I don't think an extra 10 mins here or there is a deal breaker. Never seems to bother my kids.

Mmmmdanone · 10/06/2018 09:48

A 10 min bus ride but sometimes the bus takes 40 mins to arrive even though they should be every 10.
