androb just about to ask DS if he'd heard of the band Meet and Greet, luckily the penny finally dropped just before I made a complete fool of myself Blush

welcome Peggy

Attempted to paint trellis but pup dropped ball in paint and decided to try and get ball out! An hour and a half later after trying to shower dog who had turned pink! And having a shower myself am now done for the day except I have to face phonecalls from Dgd to give tips and pointers on English language exam later. Which is only slightly better than the 45 minutes yesterday when Dgd phoned to tell me all she knew about homeostasis! ( honestly I don't know who's worse the pup or Dgd!Grin)GrinGrin

It seems an odd decision for JCQ. AH's solution would work. they wouldn't even have to gather predictions from schools around the country, just half a dozen similar schools would do, and the Department of Education already has the names of those schools for its league table analysis.

A 16 year old being stabbed though... GCSEs or not... Sad

mmzz · 30/05/2018 14:35

Just to clarify what i was saying this morning, I think it may have caused offence. I wasn't saying the only measure of reward is income. its obviously isn't (just ask a teacher or a nurse).
Income just happens to be the one that you use to repay student debts, and IMO there has to be a relationship between the cost of the degree and the value of the work it enables you to do.

mmzz · 30/05/2018 14:38

I still don't understand the whole art journey thing though (so its a good thing i don't have to do it!). I'd be saying "How do you mean "journey"? I drew the picture because I fancied drawing it and then i coloured it in using colours that i thought would make it look attractive, and I happened to have to hand. I leaned on the colouring pencil a bit more over there because my hand was getting tired..."

Do you think I'd get a rare U?

re the child in Enfield, I don't know why the school or college he is planning to go to next don't give him a free pass in to sixth form (assuming he wants to go). Though haven't read the detail so may have missed something. I know GCSEs may be useful later but he will always have an explanation as to why he didn't take them and if he gest a levels they won't matter anyway.

mmzz · 30/05/2018 14:57

PeggySchuylar welcome!

mmzz · 30/05/2018 14:58

Ds2 just ran from the room because I cast a youtube video on menstrual cycle to TV and the (young, female) teacher started talking about her periods!

Teenmum60 · 30/05/2018 15:08

Sorry I keep on loosing track of this thread in-between trying to work...

I really feel for the Enfield boy and hope the tabloid pressure will work in his favour. The JCQ do really need to get a handle on treating DC's with compassion where needed.

Wonderwine · 30/05/2018 16:08

@hmcAsWas - sorry, I also missed your post about your DM Flowers
It's very hard to lose them to dementia. My dad had it and my MIL is now in a home with it. It seems to make the grieving process longer as you 'lose' them more than once, IYSWIM. Also v.v. difficult for the remaining partner. DH is now spending a lot of time at weekends going off to see his DF who lives 150 miles away, so that is also having an impact on our family at the moment.

This 'artistic journey' log is something I need to investigate as DS wants to do Photography for A level and I'm sure there will be something similar. I really need him to consider other 'smart' ways of doing his work at A level so he covers things more quickly. I could imagine, for example, that getting into a habit of dictating a short paragraph at the end of each day about what you have been doing in your art/photography and emailing it to yourself would be a good way to capture the raw material which could be edited/ written up later. The worst thing is if they don't do it as they go along and are then faced with having to 'fake' several months worth of a journal!

I also think it would help DS to learn to touch type over summer - anyone have any online recommendations?

LooseAtTheSeams · 30/05/2018 16:09

Sostenueto I don't suppose by any chance there's a photo of pink pup?? You were probably too busy with the trellis and clean-up, though!SmileThanks

LooseAtTheSeams · 30/05/2018 16:11

Wonderwine yes! Dictating thoughts into phone as you go along would be perfect!
I've only just started to forget the art 'journey'. DS2 is pretty sure he's not going to choose art...

KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse · 30/05/2018 17:33

Just catching up. A mixed day today. Dd has done English language this morning. She's getting there. From what I can make of the mark scheme she's definitely getting towards the L5/6 boundary which would be fantastic.

Less success with geography which is one of her a-level subjects and she is hoping for a 7/8. She did a paper earlier and asked me to mark it but then didn't like the mark I gave her. She's gone to bed in disgust Confused

I don't think I'll do any more marking Grin

LooseAtTheSeams · 30/05/2018 17:43

Kickbishop marking is a thankless task! DS asked me a few weeks back if I'd set him an English paper and mark it at some point but I'm quite relieved he never followed up!Smile

Oddsocks15 · 30/05/2018 18:10

Blimey this thread moves fast! Hard to keep it up it. Too much to read back.

Just to say DD had her NCS first meet up today, it went in her words “ok” Hmm when DH picked her up she was chatting to a boy from another school Shock ..... to be continued??

hmcAsWas · 30/05/2018 18:32

Grin at the pink pup escapade and also at Bluebelle and her 'Meet & Greet' boy band!

Poor mmzz junior running in horror from a youtube presentation on periods Grin

Wonderwine - I think that's a great idea regarding habitually recording daily sound bites re the 'artistic journey' (I very much enjoyed Brainmelts no nonsense dismissal of it earlier) for photography A level. Definitely beats faking it retrospectively some months down the line

Oratory1 · 30/05/2018 19:05

Genius - DD1 has to do a 'reflective log' for her work placement. dictating snippets to phone a she went along would have been such a good idea. Bit late now

Sostenueto · 30/05/2018 19:49

For loose your right too busy cleaning pup up but here's a pic I took just now, hope you like the collar she has a staffie harness too with silver trim and a staffie dog breastplate!

Sostenueto · 30/05/2018 20:00

Pup believes in close contact but getting a bit big to lay in between my legs! Well phonecalls from Dgd was absent of English language chat as she said " its commonsense which I'm working on!"Hmm but we did have a discussion on Rio for geography , chemistry which I just said yes and mmh! In the right places and maths which I can't remember a thing as maths goes way over my head the way they do it nowadays. 5 hours revision today but early finish so she can relax and chat to her friendship group on whatever app she uses ( not Facebook.)

androbbob · 30/05/2018 20:07

bluebelle they are called Why don't We and she is very near the front

Hope the pup is ok sos

*oddsocjks my DD is doing NCS as well with her mate - she has a meet up early July before starting on 23rd July

Stickerrocks · 30/05/2018 20:46

Androbbob I didn't pay for VIP tickets for the Stones or Shawn Mendes. My heart went out to the chappy who had paid for them last night and was promptly loaded onto a stretcher after about 15 minutes and whisked off. I think the entire stadium was relieved that the band made it through the entire set unscathed!

I'm taking the pragmatic approach to grade boundaries and not even thinking about them. It's impossible to predict with certainty whether what you actually wrote corresponds with what you think you wrote and the boundaries will be set to give the necessary proportions. I've seen too many people over the years have wildly d8fferent marks to the ones they thought they had achieved and my exams simply have a pass or fail, with the pass mark set at around 70% in some cases and the typical pass rate being 28- 32% in others. Why worry when it is entirely outside of your control as soon as that script is handed in?

On the upcoming English Language exam paper 1 section B you have a choice of either writing about a picture that you are given or a story. DS's teacher has said that no-one should do the story as its far harder to score well on, I guess as you have the picture to prompt you........just wondering if others have been given similar advice?
