Year 7 end of year exams-what happens if DC does badly in a test?

My DC has had tests all week. Taken it in her stride. Until today.

She had a maths test, and she says she thinks she did badly!

She is stressed she will be moved down a set.
Please can anyone shed some light on what they do with the test results? Are they used for grading them into sets next year? Do they take the overall work they've done for the year into account?

Potentially she could be moved down a set, that's what happened in my son's school. However, there should be opportunities to move again during the year. Year 7 was tested half termly and it has been the same in year 8, there has been some movement within sets

It will vary across different schools and possibly even different departments in the same school. If the bad test score is a blip rather than a true indication of how she's performing in class, they are less likely to move her down a set.

On the flip side, moving down a set if she, for example gets flustered and makes silly mistakes might not be such a bad thing.

I'd focus more on her not getting so stressed about moving down a set tbh - really not the end of the world.

We use end of year exams for shuffling the sets for Y8, however if a student had been performing well all year in tests then just ballsed up the exam, this would be taken into account.

Also, she may feel she has done badly, but set changes would be done by comparing her score to everyone else in her group. If it was a really hard test, then everyone will have done ‘badly’ (I.e. the average mark will be much lower) and she’ll be fine.

Why don't you contact her form tutor or maths teacher and ask them? All my DCs teachers are happy to reply to emails. Every school is different so you can only get the correct answer from your school.

Honestly, we can't possibly tell you what your school will do. If you are concerned, ask the teacher.

What would be wrong with moving down a set? Why would she be 'stressed' by that Confused
