Torbay girls grammar waiting list

Hi all, my DD got 3 X yes on her 11+ results in October, so we duly applied to TGGS as our first choice school, putting Churston grammar as our 2nd choice and the local good comp 3rd. We were allocated the local comp on Thursday. After speaking to both grammars she's inside the top 10 on the waiting list for both. Does anyone have any info on waiting list movement and wether it's likely or not she would get a place? We will remain on both waiting lists until December, after that you need to apply as an in year admission. It's very difficult to get any information from either school as to wether she has any hope or not, they both say they offer a differing amount of places each year so it's not an exact science.

We have now since found out that one of the grammars we applied to has allowed the children from the local private school (that's closing down) to take the test late in January, which is after the CAF closing date for the other applicants. I can't find anywhere in our guidance notes that says this could be allowed to happen. Do we have rights to appeal on these grounds?

DS (19) was at TBGS. None of his year group at primary who were on the waiting list or appealed got in (although that was 8 years ago) however he has a few friends from all 3 grammars who joined pre GCSE in year 9 or 10. Places come up due to relocation or DC finding that grammar school isn't for them. There are more places at sixth form and all 3 grammars were undersubscribed in his year so she can join then. If your DD doesn't get in and isn't happy at the school she has been allocated, there is a good chance she can join before GCSE.

Which school has she been allocated, if you don't mind me asking? Maybe one of DS's friends went there and I can put your mind at rest about what it is like?

There is a MNer who is an appeals consultant who gives good legal advice. Maybe you can search for her on last year's threads and PM her?

Thanks for your reply she's been allocated TA which is still a good school, but as she scored 71% on the exam we do feel a little hard done to, especially as she would have got in in any other year. She will remain on the waiting list till Dec then she can make a in year transfer if/when a space becomes available.

TA has totally transformed since it became an academy. One of DS's friends actually transferred there from the boys' school as he preferred the vocational options available. Good luck to your DD thug, I hope she gets what she wants.

I remember well how it felt like the end of the world for some of DS's friends when they didn't get into the grammar schools but they have all done well and gone on to university. He was reunited with quite a few friends from primary school in the sixth form who transferred in. Looking back, it really hasn't made much difference which school they went to. The bright kids did well wherever they went.

A friend’s daughter goes to TGGS and she told me they have 15 places open in year 8. Maybe have a look at that if she doesn’t get a place in year 7. It should tell you on the school website.
