I'm panicking that secondary application may not have been submitted

My DH made an online application. We should have received an e-mail on 1st March informing us which school DS has been offered. He didn't receive anything and can't find any record of the application, a confirmation or a six digit code that our local authority mentions you need to log in to your account. Nothing in the post either (although it says letters are sent by second class post on 1st..and with the snow we possibly wouldn't have that by now anyway). It hasn't been possible to speak to anyone at the council to check.
Other parents have all had the e-mail. I'm pretty convinced that for whatever reason DH didn't submit an application properly.
In the interests of not drip feeding, we have put down a school as first choice that we were not expecting to be offered, but were planning to appeal. I'm now really worried that we may not even get the second choice school.
Does anyone know what happens if you apply after the deadline and what the implications are likely to be? Any advice much appreciated.

Rather than having used a different email, could he have mistyped it ? This would mean you would not have received the confirmation or subsequent offer email.

If you’re in Kent you will definitely have got a confirm e mail, they sent the school places out on 1st by e mail too. No letters yet, but the snow is woe here. Has it maybe gone to DH’s junk folder.

TSSDNCOP · 03/03/2018 16:36

Sorry, I mean confirm e mail if your online school request.

Friskyandhustley · 03/03/2018 16:38

Some really great advice on getting to the bottom of all the IT stuff and the importance of being able to show that we submitted (if we can). Very grateful for the appeal info - thanks tiggy. That's made me feel like there will be a route to sorting this out, rather than the only option being a school 20 miles away.

Have you checked your spam folder?

TigerBreadAddict · 03/03/2018 16:46

How far back does your internet history go? Can you check for evidence the portal was accessed that way?

prh47bridge · 03/03/2018 16:47

As long as you make the deadline for submitting appeals, your appeal will be heard along with any other appeals. The fact you applied late (if that is the case) will mean you can't argue that a mistake has been made but it won't stop you from winning your appeal. You can win by showing that the disadvantage to your son from not being admitted to this school outweighs the problems the school will face from having to cope with an additional pupil.

Leaspr · 03/03/2018 16:49

I got an email confirming my submission with Peterborough Council. Try searching 'school application' in your emails?

feral · 03/03/2018 17:04

I'm a control freak and would never leave something like this to my DH for this reason so I feel for you OP. I hope it gets resolved!

Friskyandhustley · 03/03/2018 17:20

Feral - I normally am too, but had been moaning about always having to be responsible for this sort of thing! So I suppose I can't have it all ways. Why couldn't it have been one of the endless less important things that went wrong though...forgotten trip money or world book day costume or one of the other 73 things on the ever regenerating list of minor domestic admin?

It's all a bit sensitive - he doesn't want to discuss it any further until we've been able to talk to the council to see what's actually happened.

This is a bit concerning for me... I wonder if he forgot...?

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/03/2018 17:36

I reckon he forgot personally

He would have had to submit the address evidence so what are the chances of 2 confirmation emails not appearing plus at least 2 or three others that councils sent out. All not appearing.

Gileswithachainsaw · 03/03/2018 17:38

Unless he is being a bit dim and used a different email account

ImaginaryCat · 03/03/2018 17:50

Primary heads received a list on Weds afternoon to help manage disappointed parents on Thursday. I'd contact your current head before anyone else on Monday morning. Perhaps even send an email now. He/she might just check over the weekend and respond out of hours to put your mind at rest.

OldHag1 · 03/03/2018 17:52

My daughter was given a letter at school with the code on it.

Has he checked junk folders in the email. I can’t believe he would forget it is far too important.

Can you contact another parent at school and ask if they have heard anything?

Good luck.

LIZS · 03/03/2018 17:57

Does he have form for overlooking stuff? Thinking of another poster who had a thread last autumn where her dh had not registered their ds for 11+ exam but eventually was accepted under mitigating circumstances - wonder if he got his preferred place? Hope it is a glitch op.

ChaosNeverRains · 03/03/2018 18:04

Sounds like DH forgot.

RandomMess · 03/03/2018 18:08

Happened to my friend with infant school application there was some sort of internet/computer glitch and it never occurred to her that she should have received an email confirmation stating application received Sad

So it does happen. It really should be all over the application that if submission works that you will get an email receipt rather than in the small print!

seesea · 03/03/2018 18:42

Poor you OP Thankstry not to worry and contact people on Monday. It sounds to me like your DH didn't submit it properly.

lIzs that is great about that other thread turning out Halo

Looneytune253 · 03/03/2018 18:45

You do know that you would only have grounds for appeal if they didn’t follow procedure properly don’t you? You would have to prove they made a mistake with the allocations and it doesn’t sound like you have evidence of that? What would be the basis of your appeal?

PatriciaHolm · 03/03/2018 18:53

looney, that's not true. For secondary appeals, you need to show the detriment to the child of not getting a place is greater than the detriment to the school of admitting. It doesn't depend in any way on the admission authority making a mistake. Of course, if they have, then that gives grounds as well, but it's not required for a successful appeal.

I really don't think he forgot. I remember him telling me it had been done. I do think he's somehow failed to submit it properly and not realised, and probably also not read the web site where it explains about acknowledgement emails etc. I'm going to double check with him that he's looked in all possible accounts, spam and follow other advice on here about ways to find a trace of the application. Not holding out much hope. Then council and headteacher on Monday. Probably followed by a swift late application. Then I expect we'll end up going down the appeal route, which we would likely have done anyway (to try and get him into the school I think will do most to support his dyspraxia). Really appreciate all the kind words and clear thinking. I feel a bit less panicky now I have a plan. I'll update when there's anything to tell and share anything I find out which might be useful.

OP posts:
Friskyandhustley · 03/03/2018 19:16

Oh - and just to be clear - I wasn't talking about trying to appeal on grounds of error (being that it's probably our fault).
