Voluntary aided boys school

Both me and my son have our hearts set on him getting into a certain volutary aided boys school in the city centre. They produce excellent grades and "troublesome" kids tend not to even think about putting it down as a choice so its a good set of kids that are there.

As it's in the city centre it has no catchment area, boys wanting to apply have to have an interview and a test. They say the test is to ensure the school get a mixture of abilities rather than weed out the brightest ones...are they just covering their backs here or is this probably true?

Anyway, its quite a small school but I can't imagine many young lads wanting to go there (uniform would probably put them off for a start since its a naval school) so what do you reckon the chances are of us getting in?

worth a try - voluntary aided though that sounds like you have to have some sort of religious reference ie catholic schools are normally voluntary aided

Talk to the school secretary - I find that they are a useful source of info and she'll be able to give you some idea of your chances (and whether there are any specfic requirements).

Agree with Ladymuck. You could also have a good look at the school's website and admissions policy. If the school's a naval one, would an interest in matters nautical be an advantage? I know the London Nautical School has a questionnaire to assess nautical interest, but the school you're thinking of may be different.

As for not many young lads wanting to go there, are you assuming they decide for themselves? It's a hotly debated topic on here. Furthermore, quirky uniforms actually appeal to some children (ask around and see how many would like to go to Hogwarts )

Not all voluntary aided schools insist on all the pupils being of a particular religion by the way (and I should know as an atheist with a son at one).

And remember that if you have set your hearts on him going there, many other parents and children are probably thinking the same thing!
