Where are the best non-selective schools - looking to move

We love the county we live in. But schools are atrocious at worst, just plain below average at best. Notoriously bad county-wide and across all ages.

We’re currently paying for private schools just to get our kids a decent education but would very much like to not be spending £25k a year.

We could, in theory move anywhere in the UK.

Where should we go to give us a good choice of non-selective state schools? One DC would most likely get into any grammar with ease but maybe not the other. And also I don’t want to up and change our whole lives without any guarantees IYSWIM.

The leafier parts of Hampshire have good comps

physicskate · 13/02/2018 09:31

York?

BrendansDanceShoes · 13/02/2018 12:26

Harrogate, 4/5 excellent comprehensives but check catchment areas carefully, also 2 schools have faith based selection.

Winchester
Romsey
Alresford
Liphook
Petersfield

but the top one is the best

BorgQueenie · 13/02/2018 13:18

Salisbury has grammars
Chippenham has good state secondaries
Pates in Stroud direction is v good

Hoppinggreen · 13/02/2018 13:20

My dd goes to an excellent Private School which costs us less £10000 per year ( West Yorkshire).
Naice area and quite cheap houses but state Secondaries are a bit rubbish. There are 3 Grammar schools too

@ConfusedConnie
All of Hampshire has Comps.
If you live in the catchment of a decent one, you WILL get in.

Winchester has three - all of which are really good
Romsey has 2 - both of which are good
Chandlers Ford has one which is good
Alresford and Petersfield each have one - which is good
Hedge End, Fair Oak, Hamble, Swanmore - each have a decent one
Liphook has a good one

and the 6th form in Winchester gets great results for everybody.

THere is a reason why Hampshire districts top the "best places to live" lists every year
NO SELECTIVE SCHOOLS
yippee

Alresford

Hersetta427 · 13/02/2018 22:50

Bishops Stortford in Herts has 3 of the top 10 non selective sin the country. One boys, one girls and one mixed.

pieceofpurplesky · 13/02/2018 22:52

West Cheshire has some excellent schools.

Efferlunt · 13/02/2018 22:59

Yes, Hampshire. Great leafy comps - a lot still in local authority control rather than this academy mush-mash thing. All roads lead to Peter Symonds to six form which has a stellar reputation.

Middleoftheroad · 14/02/2018 07:05

Which county are you currently in Confused?

TalkinPeace · 14/02/2018 11:29

All roads lead to Peter Symonds to six form
or Barton Peverill for Languages and Humanities
or Sparsholt for Rural / Agricultural
or City for Technical / Marine
or Totton for Public Service
or Eastleigh for care / hair and beauty

Lots of kids do not take A levels : Hampshire comps cater for ALL kids.
