DD , head 9, has ADHD.
She moved to her current school (GDST) in year 8 and was allowed to do only one NOT to make life a bit easier. This means she has 3 free periods a fortnight, which are described as 'study skills' periods; they are supervised and either led by a teacher of allow her to do homework.
She has to choose options this week. In addition to statutory maths, English ×2 and combined science, she wants to do Latin, drama, history and geography. She could also do ICT as an after-school extra.
At options evening last week, the year head ( who also runs the study skills periods) strongly recommended that DD drop an option, in order to keep the free periods. She feels they provide breathing space for DD.
DD is adamant she won't drop geography, history of drama and isn't keen to drop Latin either; we feel Latin would be good to have in the absence of a MFL.
So, do we take school's advice and drop her to 8, or do we let her start 9 and see how it goes? And in either case, do we add in the ICT full course, or just forget that?
DD is reasonably bright, doing well ( not brilliantly, and with a fair amount of support from us) and enjoys school. Her spiky cognitive profile means she scores anywhere between 48% and 94% in exams.
