What does DS wear to 11+ interview tomorrow? Please help!

DS has an interview at a fairly casual, low-key private school tomorrow.

Does he wear school uniform or home clothes? We've been given no instructions.

I'd love any advice as I haven't a clue! The school itself doesn't have a uniform, and it's a Saturday, hence my indecision.

Thank you!

why wou;d he wear schooluniform on a saturday to a school that has no uniform?

a nice shirt and smart trousers/jeans. Perhaps a jumper if it's cold[not a hoody]

My Dc did an exam at a similar school. I couldn’t decide either but went for casual and got there early with school uniform in the car just in case. There were more than 100 at the exam and only a handful in uniform. I would assume the same for an interview.

FairyPenguin · 26/01/2018 20:24

I would go for shirt and trousers/dark jeans. School shoes.

Agree with FairyPenguin. But bring uniform in case.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Fair point crunch but the other (Saturday) interviews he was invited to specified that the boys should wear uniform.

Thanks!

My DS wore his uniform to all exams and interviews. The last interview didn't specify but nearly all the kids wore uniform. Although one young lady did wear what appeared to be a bright pink tracksuit/shell suit which had either the name of a school or a club on the back which was a contrast to everyone else!

How did it go?

Greenleave · 28/01/2018 12:54

We came from a state school and all her uniforms are rather wornout(really worn out) and we went for an interview recently and there were kids in shiny private school uniforms, combed hair etc with many type of badges( never known there was such a thing). Mine was a little uncomfortable and refused to take her coat off so she went in with her coat on. I found it hillarious, first tough lesson in life teaching you being yourself finding the differences of root and background.

It’s very sad your DD could not have looked smart at least, green. I think you embarrassed her in front of other children and you should have known better. Of course children coming from prep schools will look smart if they have to turn up in uniform.

My DD1 wore her stare school uniform to her tests and interviews but it was smart. She was not ashamed but was proud of her school. You always need to think of the child, not some lesson in the socioeconomic divide. Do you think she will now be happy at this school?

OP - clean, nearly new, casual clothes. Shoes polished. Pullover if it’s a bit cold.

BubblesBuddy · 28/01/2018 17:20

state uniform - of course.

Greenleave · 28/01/2018 18:59

It was too quick to judge Bubbles, we found the experience was humorous, in no way mine felt ashamed of herself or her school or her school uniform rather than felt a little uncomfortable because everyone else looked nervous and uncomfortable and too shiny to our tastes. In no way mine would allow me to comb her hair with gel and tie her pony tail with ribbons. We came straight from school after a nearful day so too much frame climbing had made her newly ironed uniform looked ok in the morning then didnt look the same once we were there. We were just spot on time so she had decided not to take her coat off after registering and went straight to the interview room. It was ok, she wasnt nervous or scared and just be herself. We joked about the numbers of badges everyone had because her school doesnt do badges.

greenleave we were in the same position with our DS state school uniform appearing a little worn, despite only being a few months old. We got some new shoes and ironed his uniform. However a hoodie did form part of the uniform. He came out of his interview for W with a line of prep school kids in a uniform, didn't bother him as we were advised he had done exceptionally well and was humble which was nice to hear! At his St D interview there was a girl in a pink shell suit which i was a little surprised to see but couldnt help but think , good on you girl, as if she is that confident what she wears wont be an issue!

Greenleave · 28/01/2018 19:42

Yes, it was our attitude too.

Everyone had both of their parents with them, looked very shiny and nervous compared to us(hair carefully comb with gel and couple had ribbons), I think they must have had change after school as no way a 9 yrs old would look like this after a full day at school( we did 10+). I noticed she didnt take her coat off(it was a very neutral black smart coat...phew) then she went straight in for 10 mins and we were talking about everyone’s outfits especially the impressive number of badges on their uniform suits on the drive home. Small note for next time though, bring spared uniform once pick them up from school avoiding chances someone torn their shirts, trousers during the school time. (At the same time I wasnt making it a big deal for her being comfortable and her quirky-self. Take it or leave it, this is her).

Thanks fairy - it went really well!

He wore nearly new navy cords, smart shirt and his Schoffel gilet which he is umbilically attached to. Think he might have looked a bit trad for this slightly left field school, but he said the interview was great and he thinks he got in.

What he doesn't know is the hundreds of children applying for a handful of places, but I shall make this clear to him nearer the time the offers come out...

PS he is at a state primary too and even in smart, freshly ironed uniform, plus the fact he is tall and handsome (obvs!), I felt he didn't look as smart as the prep school boys in their blazers etc at other schools. Relief to wear home clothes and feel on an even playing field, sartorially!
