A-level choices to go in to early years teaching

Hi,

My daughter is in year 11 and wants to go in to the school 6th form in September. Her application needs to be in at the end of the month but she is still unsure about what 3 subjects to choose.

She does GCSE psychology at the moment which she really enjoys and is predicted an A* so would like to continue with this possibly with sociology too.

She enjoys maths and is good at it so was considering taking it for A level but I have heard it is a huge jump from GCSE and would hate for her to struggle with it and regret taking it. She got a 6 in her mocks so not sure if that result is considered good enough.

A level Media studies was another idea as she enjoys that and is predicted a good grade.

She would like to go in to early years primary teaching in the future and ideally go to university. Are there any specific A level requirements for getting on to teaching courses?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Looked into this as dd was considering a similar route in Y11.
My advice would be to work backwards and have a look at a few teaching/early years degrees and see what the requirements are.
For any sort of teaching it's preferable to have at least one A level in a national curriculum subject so Pyschology/sociology/media studies won't fit this criteria.
Biology is a good fit with Pyschology or alternatively would suggest English Lit instead of Media Studies.
English/Maths/Science are core national curriculum subjects so would be good choices.
Some sixth forms may consider a 6 too low for A level Maths but her grade may increase between now and results day.

There is an Early Years PGCE which follows the degree of your choice. Alternatively, look for BEd courses.

To follow up: a lot of the BEd courses are for primary education. Early years specialist degrees do not seem to give QTS status upon completion of the degree and you may have to do the PGCE anyway. So think carefully about what you apply for. Subjects don’t matter to much but English would be good.
