GCSE Maths - advice needed pls

DS gained a level 3 at GCSE maths last year and started an Apprenticeship in Recruitment level 3 in June 2017. During his Apprenticeship he has achieved his Level 2 Functional Skills.
I am currently paying for a private tutor with a view for him to take his GCSE maths again in JUne through a private college.

DS is not interested at all and keeps telling me that he is unlikely to pass, I am wasting my money etc. He is just not good at maths and finds it really difficult. I almost feel I am paying for a Tutor just to go through a process to show that I have done all I can to get him through but he is not interested.

He loves his job and his boss is delighted with him and he is happy to do the work required for his Apprenticeship but I am concerned without the GCSE maths he will not get very far, particularly if he wants to change jobs.

Any advice would be really appreciated as I feel like I am wasting my hard earned money when he is not interested.

DS did get Level 5 in English so I am not so concerned about this.

Many thanks

Are you sure functional skills level 2 will not be enough? Well done your ds for achieving that. I have done it myself!
Level 5 for English sounds fine.

He won't pass if he does not want to. If I was his tutor, I would sign him off.

He can go back to adult GCSE classes in a few years, when he is ready (they are free).

L2 maths is good enough for most apprenticeships.

Thanks DD - that's the problem, I really don't know. Every role you look at seems to want GCSE Grade C at Maths/English (the new level 4 I believe). Functional Skills maths doesn't get a mention.
Just worried that if I don't try to encourage him to resit the GCSE time will just pass and he will never achieve this.
Although I may be wasting my time anyway as he is not interested in Maths.

Level 2 is equivalent in standard to GCSE C (or new 4) though without the breadth of knowledge. It is sufficient for most apprenticeships. I wouldn't bother paying for tutoring if ds is not interested because it doesn't sound like he needs it yet. He can always take it later if it becomes necessary.

Going into recruitment is setting him off on an office/sales based path and if he wants to progress along that he will need it. But he may not recognise that until he hits a brick wall. Try showing him adverts / people specifications for roles like that of his boss.
