Should Y10 dc be revising over Xmas hols?

Just been reading other threads about GCSE workloads and wondering if I should be encouraging dd (Y10) to do some revision over Xmas holiday period in her weaker subjects? Or is it better for her to have a break and just do any homework she has?

GCSEs seem very content heavy to me and I feel that doing a little now to really get to grips with material could save panic later. She struggles to learn all the facts in biology in particular which she doesn't find that interesting.

What are your views? What are your Y10 dc doing?

i won't be telling my year 10 to revise over the holiday. He has worked his socks off all term, is on target for 8s in everything [school refuse to predict 9s] and deserves a jolly good rest. he'll do any homeowrk but other than that-it's a no here.

TeenTimesTwo · 17/12/2017 10:07

I would say No. Have a break.

Unless she started in y9, in which case I would say consider making some revision cards / mind maps for science/history/geography.

Or struggling with maths in which case a bit of time trying to catch up may be beneficial.

No doubt others will have their own views.

No.

Caveat is that mine only just got what he needed at the end of Y11, so my laissez faire attitude is possibly atypical for MN. On the plus side now he's at college and expected to work far more independently than at GCSE, he's studying conscientiously entirely of his own accord, with zero nagging required from me.

i had no exams in year 10 - i would have done some online revision that our school had us signed up to. i would get £1 rewards or small bags of sweets or a handful of treats from my mum when i got 100% on these online lessons. something that made it fun and seem worth my time
but i didnt stress or bury myself in it as i had all my GCSE exams in year 11 and one early in year 9
some of my friends had a maths exam in year 10 so they revised more than i did
(i wasnt the best student but this lack of revision over christmas in year 10 didnt impact me - i passed everything)

My son is in Y10 and has also worked his socks off all term but I would expect him to know if he should revise!! I wouldn't expect to have to tell him. He is in charge of his learning.

No. No good comes of obsessive worrying about exams 17 months away.
Encourage the homework that's been set then leave be.

My y10 dd will either be at the stables, sleeping, trying out different makeup looks or going out with her friends. She’s worked extremely hard all term and needs a break. She’s got a perfectionist streak though so needs reining in rather than encouraging when it comes to revision and studying in general

A bit, Ds1 will be making notes on a topic he has just covered whilst it is still fresh in his mind. It will take a couple of hours.

He will do it in a word document so he can add stuff in later. He can type a lot faster than he can write.

He too is on target for 7+ for all subjects. We broke up on Friday 15th so he has a whole week before it gets too Christmasy. If he was breaking up closer to Christmas then no, he wouldn't be doing anything.

MaisyPops · 17/12/2017 15:15

I have a y10 class. I won't be setting homework over christmas, nor am I expecting them to revise.

Some of my students ask what extra they can do. I tell them they can get ahead reading the set texts (English) or they can try to read a range of fiction and non fiction and develop positive reading habits.

I'd avoid against excessive work. They need a break in my opinion.

pointythings · 17/12/2017 15:17

DD2 is going to start on a formula bank for Physics, which is her weakest subject. Apart from that the plan is to relax, relax, relax.

Bekabeech · 18/12/2017 06:51

On the whole No. But mine will be revising RE as she sits the GCSE in that this year and has a Mock after Christmas.

QGMum · 18/12/2017 08:43

Thank you all for responding. Consensus is clearly that, in general, no extra revision is needed at this stage.

Only if they've got exams after Christmas. My ds doesn't have Y10 exams until after the Easter holidays.

Kazzyhoward · 18/12/2017 09:31

It's an ideal time to catch up/revise any weak areas. But if everything is going to plan, then just do homework only.

spurtions · 18/12/2017 12:42

Absolutely not. It has been a very tough term and I want him to completely chill out. He’s doing very well but my priority is to keep him as calm as possible before it ramps up again for year 11
