Esher College Problems

We are having problems with this college. Are there widespread issues? I do know of a few students who are not happy and one who has attempted suicide twice after being asked to leave 6:1 only a few weeks into the first term. Would be interested to hear others' opinions.

Why were the students not happy? Why were some asked to leave?

IMO, highly regarded sixth form colleges are ruthless about things like attendance in the first few weeks, regardless of reasons or pastoral concerns.

My dc loves it! It's large and can be a shock for those that come from smaller schools.

Being asked to leave so early on is NOT what they routinely do - they give kids lots of chances so the issues must have been very severe (drugs dealing for example).

Sorry - what problems are you having? I assume you've gone to tutor, then escalated to tutor team leader?

I only hear good things from those I know who are at Esher. It’s a huge place where students are very much expected to be self organising, and hours can be short (ie less than a full day) meaning there’s plenty of room for other distractions. It won’t suit everyone as a result especially if coming from a traditional school.

I have heard negative things about Esher, I think like other high achieving colleges it's fine for most students but not for some.
There are other colleges which can be an option for a second chance but any issues do need to be addressed first.

High achieving - LOL

Blostma · 12/06/2018 13:10

What makes you question Esher being high achieving winkytoo ?

This academy hasn't been OFSTED inspected, if it were to be, then concerns must be raised about how they cut parents out, meaning that problems (drugs, parties) may not be picked up in time and performance falls off rapidly for many pupils. Sorry, it was better as a school when the Education Act applied to them, at least that would have afforded you protection and a safety net.

FFS surreyparent1 why are you resurrecting old Esher College threads. Esher has NEVER been a school. It has always been a college, and is exactly the same place pre and post academy conversion.

Sixth formers whether they're at school or college go to parties and a lot take drugs and drink at parties. Why you think a college should be involved with kids going to house parties I don't know. Hmm They have a zero tolerance policy to drugs and alcohol on the premises and LOTS of talks and advice to the kids themselves, including an on-site counsellor and nurse.
