Harry academy alarming tweet

whaz · 22/11/2017 12:25

Harris academy has tweeted along the lines of the following

Particularly at this time of year female students should not be walking alone to or from school. They especially mention mornings. Ending the tweet with a be safe message.

What on earth are they going on about have girls been attacked?

Why would such a tweet be sent?

Does anyone know?

Is it unsafe for females to be walking to or from school at a particular time of the year or has some real and awful risk occurred?

I'm assuming they have got volunteers or pcsos to patrol the routes to the school?

I'm also going to assume they are meeting kids of the buses?

Or are girls responsible for their own safety and it's their fault if something happens Hmm

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/11/2017 12:29

Not that I know the school but that's a really odd tweet

whaz · 22/11/2017 12:31

It is a really bizarre tweet.

What are they on about?

Are girls being attacked and is this their response ?

If someone could post the link to it is would be good as I can’t copy and paste it.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 22/11/2017 12:32

Could you link?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 22/11/2017 12:32

x-posts. sorry! is this Harris in Dundee?

whaz · 22/11/2017 12:33

It is Harris academy Greenwich??

How bizarre and it doesn’t seem right. I will look up police reports but what an alarming tweet.

Glib at the end to say be safe and be Street smart.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 22/11/2017 12:34

Do they just mean because of dark mornings?

whaz · 22/11/2017 12:37

Well it is dark for boy and girls, males and females isn’t it.

Going to try copy out the tweet.

Going to check with the police and local papers.

Girls unable to walk to and from school alone is just ridiculous at secondary school.

Finola1step · 22/11/2017 12:37

Why not email the school direct and ask if the tweet was a general safety one or is the school acting on specific intelligence from the police?

whaz · 22/11/2017 12:45

Does this link work? Tweet says particularly at this time of the year and refers to incidents and yes I will email the school.

OP posts:
MrsJayy · 22/11/2017 12:49

Maybe because it is dark butreally they should be saying in their safety message All pupils should walk together not mentioning girls

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 22/11/2017 12:50

That seems so iffy. Do boys never get mugged?

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/11/2017 12:53

How are the kids and parents going to feel about this there is literally zero choice for most.

You can't just say what they said then offer zero solution to the problem.

And yes address it to all students at least.

VivaLeBeaver · 22/11/2017 12:58

Seriously?

My 16yo dd walks every evening from the local bus station to the train station. There's a very deserted, seldom used short cut. I've told her not to use it when it's dark. She's 5ft nothing. Is she at more risk of being raped/mugged than a 16yo boy? I would say so. Am I a bad parent for telling her not to use the short cut unless she's with someone? Should I be more right on and tell her she can do anything the boys can?

whaz · 22/11/2017 13:01

No response as yet.

They refer to incidents over a number of months so it can’t just be a darkness thing.

I may put a note in the local board.

I think the way they finish the tweet is flippant as well.

If you are just street safe everything will be ok?

If you just have your freedom and liberty curtailed where you make sure you don’t independently travel to your secondary school?

I hope the police are actively involved with the school and proper proactive measures are taken with regard to the threat, what ever it is?

Maybe someone connected with the school will come along.

Statistically young men are more at risk of attack.

I don’t like the tone of the tweet, not just for the victim blaming, but because it contains no useful information. If there had been a spate of attacks against girls in the area and they were suggesting traveling in groups on foot where possible I can see the sense. If it’s just “women beware because if you don’t you deserve what you get” then that’s really not on.

whaz · 22/11/2017 13:03

movingup you said it much better than I. Smile this has really annoyed me

DustandRubble · 22/11/2017 13:04

Could be to do with this, I am not sure they have caught the attacker yet: www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/10/18/police-hunting-serial-sex-attacker-targeting-schoolgirls-south/

whaz · 22/11/2017 13:14

dustandrubble thank you for posting that link, that is horrific, truly horrific the poor victims and their families.

I hope every resource is put in place to stop this.

The tweet from the school is terrible.

Cut and paste Particularly at this time of year, we advise that female students avoid walking to school alone or walking home alone. There have been a number of incidents over the last two months (mostly in the morning) in the borough. Our message: be streetwise, be alert, be safe.

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/11/2017 13:18

whaz

Hopefully someone will be able to say what has been put in place.

You can't just tweet putting it on the female students.

What choice do they have anyway

BubblesBuddy · 22/11/2017 13:18

I don’t really see what is wrong with asking girls to stay safe, giving good advice about this, especially if girls have been attacked. One would hope they were talking about walking in darkness in assemblies to reinforce the point. I would like to think the boys were advised too.

At my DDs university, the girls were warned not to walk alone back from the city centre to the hall of residence and always get a cab with a group of friends. That’s a fair warning as far as I am concerned. Be aware and take precautions!

CalmanOnSpeeddial · 22/11/2017 13:21

Have Harris Academy checked the stats on teen assaults in public places? Because I’m pretty sure that it’s not the girls who are most likely to be victims. Young males are serveral times more likely to be the victims of assault or murder in public.

DustandRubble · 22/11/2017 13:22

I agree the tweet is bad whaz. If they were concerned because of these attacks they could have referenced them and suggested all children (no need to say just girls) travel to school with a friend.

whaz · 22/11/2017 13:23

Thanks everyone I actually feel sick in the stomach now. I was worried and then alarmed but had first wondered if it was a sexist old dinosaur at a school being an idiot.

I will follow up with the school and will report back but wish to take a break for now.

I will try get them to take it down and I hope they have communicated properly with parents and other students.

This is just so sad that this is happening.

What a world we live in.

How can someone protect themselves by being street smart and staying safe from someone coming up to them in the street and sexually assaulting them. AngryAngryAngry
