I am looking for such a school, so please do give me names and places where I can find such a school for my child. Thanks

Who are "we"? Are you royal? For how many people do you speak, PhilODox?

Scabbersley · 13/10/2017 13:52

Are you writing an article on it? It seems very unlikely that someone would move across the country for this very reason

Snowlake · 13/10/2017 13:59

No I am not writing an article, I am not an education professional, honestly. Just trying to work out a few workable options out of many for my child.

This school recently won an award of some sort from mayor of London for its differentiated teaching (they call it next step). The secondary section is newish so no gcse results yet to see how it all pans out www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/education-and-youth/schools-success/schools-success-profiles/whitefriars-school

They don't set but kids select from a range of activities to complete dependant on their ability/knowledge in that area each lesson

Ta1kinPeece · 13/10/2017 14:12

Snowlake
If you are rich enough to move anywhere in the country just to avoid setting, you must be rich enough to go private.
If you are not that rich, then you must have an area in mind.

LoniceraJaponica · 13/10/2017 14:20

"Why would anyone want no setting in maths? The gulf between top and bottom ability is enormous"

Exactly. Teachers are overworked and stressed enough as it is. DD's school didn't set in year 7, then set for maths and English in years 8 and 9. Obviously they set for the GCSE years. I don't see how you would get the best results out of a mixed ability class in KS4, especially in maths, the sciences and English.

Why are you being so cagey about the reason for not wanting sets?

AuntieFester · 13/10/2017 14:27

As pps have said, it sounds most schools set sooner or later.
Plenty of threads about home education if you are considering that option.

steppemum · 13/10/2017 15:38

OP- most people on here really do try to help, but bearing in mind they are just doing this out of their own time and interest, you need to actually respond to people if you want them to continue.

Your posts are abrupt, uninformative and dismissive.
Of course that is your right, but if you give a little, you get a little....

PesoisaTool · 16/10/2017 19:18

Some schools set in some subjects and not others, some set from year 8 onwards or never.....it's not quite as clear cut as "no setting". Very odd post IMHO.

ujerneyson · 17/10/2017 09:02

Do you really want your child in a maths class where some of them are still battling with their times tables while others are doing advanced trigonometry? That's just nuts.

Wouldn't it be a bit more helpful if you gave an idea of the area of the country you live in?

Do you want to move house to find a school with no sets? That seems a bit extreme.

I know a school local to me which up until last year did set, now I'm told it doesn't but I'd be prepared to bet that in a couple more years it will change back.

As others have said not setting in maths is very hard to understand and your abrupt posting style isn't giving much to go on to try and help you

roguedad · 28/10/2017 11:54

I think people might do well just to answer the OP’s question rather than questioning why the question is being posed. I personally find it really annoying when people instead ask me why I want to know something or tell me I am asking the wrong question.

I do not know the names of any non setting schools. I would not send my kids to one that fails to set for maths. Having endured a mixed ability English class where some kids where learning Shakespeare and others were doing basic reading skills I do not have much tolerance for it in other academic subjects either. It can work if you have a great teacher in a smaller class who works hard to teach every child to their ability. But one might easily end up with a dolt who says none of the class can move on to the next topic until everyone has grasped the current one. So I’d love to know why the OP thinks her child would be better without setting, but that’s not a reason not to suggest names.

Alwaysbusydoingsomething · 28/10/2017 12:04

I know a middle school that doesn’t set but then the various high schools do. I would not recommend the school though.

PettsWoodParadise · 28/10/2017 12:15

DD’s Grammar does not set in Y7 but does for maths from Y8 but not much else until GCSE choices. I also know some very tiny independents that don’t set as the class sizes are too small but they will often work with differentiation or similar techniques. I have always looked at the overall quality of teaching and progress in a school, how happy the students are and what opportunities and curriculum choices they have. I certainly wouldn’t choose a school solely based on setting or not.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 28/10/2017 16:40

I'm about 99% certain King Solomon Academy doesn't set.

LadyinCement · 28/10/2017 16:52

Unless people's dcs actually currently attend the schools in question, you can't be sure they aren't talking a load of bull.

It has been said on this thread that a certain school doesn't set. It most certainly does.

Your only way of knowing for sure is identifying area of choice and then contacting the schools.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2017 17:10

I’m looking for a house with a view.
No idea of area and accept that view may be built on when I move in.

Any suggestions?

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2017 17:11

I’d like to go on holiday.
No country in mind but I’d like a hotel which serves chicken.

I accept this may not be on the menu when I go.

Thoughts?

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2017 17:13

I’m considering buying some clothes. I like the colour orange. Has anyone bought any orange clothes and if so can they tell me the store. I will move near the store. I understand that the store might never sell another orange item when I move there.

Hmm
DellaPorter · 28/10/2017 17:26

Queen's Park community school in Brent.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 28/10/2017 18:28

Queen’s Park set for maths in Year 11 (see page 3 of their options booklet). Their KS4 options are also created to align with ability levels.

Thankyou for the laughs 😂

BringOnTheScience · 30/10/2017 23:59

My DC's school does not set for maths and it's a f*ing nightmare.

One DC v talented and was frustrated by slow pace and distractions. Other DC total opposite, needs help but doesn't get it because the whole class moves on.

Rural area, so it's the only secondary we can get to, so moving schools is not an option.
