Recommendations? Private schools in Southampton

DD is currently in year 5 and we’re considering options for secondary school. Local comprehensive is huge and seems to have a good reputation but we’d like to look in to private schools too. Does anyone have any recommendations? Not really sure where to start!

TBH the OP asked about private rather than Catholic

my information comes from the kids on the buses Smile

Yes, it has gone off topic, however I was quite shocked at the GCSE results of the likes of Wildern and Bohunt this year. Plus I would seriously consider St Anne's if I lived in the area, if nothing else their productions are spectacular!

Ta1kinPeece · 13/10/2017 20:07

St Annes is selective.
Wildern and Bohunt are not.
End of.

Redsrule · 13/10/2017 20:17

Selective on religious grounds, not, as far as I am aware, linked to IQ? Most pupils are not RC I believe. Only been there a few times but seems a nice school, so do Wildern and Bohunt but they do not seem to have coped with the new GCSE exams as well. After all their catchment areas include less areas of urban deprivation,

AngeliqueDePeyrac · 13/10/2017 20:25

Have you looked at Meoncross?

Ta1kinPeece · 13/10/2017 20:52

Bohunt is 30 miles from here so not really relevant

Toynbee / Thornden / Swanmore / Wyvern / Perins
and the other "east of Southampton" schools are a better measure than one which is at the top of the A3

AgathaRaisonDetra · 13/10/2017 22:17

Is there really a private school called Greggs? ShockShock

Ta1kinPeece · 13/10/2017 22:38

THe Gregg School _ a purely wallet private
lovely grounds

AgathaRaisonDetra · 13/10/2017 23:20

Do they have nice pies for lunch?

Ta1kinPeece · 14/10/2017 12:05

youare
That table is weird
as there are more than 144 secondaries in Hampshire
and the confidence intervals on those Progress 8 scores render them meaningless

youarenotkiddingme · 14/10/2017 13:51

Yeah I looked at confidence scores too!
I wondered if it was because they were provisional?

However for the schools local to me the results seem to fit what goes on.

youarenotkiddingme · 14/10/2017 14:00

Sorry didn't explain that well! I get what confidence scores are (the 95% etc) but wondered if they'd change when all results are in?

Hi - my heads whirling about secondary school applications. I have one child a boy. Deadline end of this month. Im interested in any insights to Southampton secondarys... Anyone able to tell me their experience of pastoral care? Reccomendations welcome

TeenTimesTwo · 06/10/2018 18:50

Which side of Southampton are you?

Both Romsey secondary schools (both very good) take kids from West/North side of S'oton e.g. Shirley. Romsey School has v good pastoral care imo.

What's on your shortlist?

Kalmkat · 06/10/2018 19:37

Hi thanks. We are Highfield area, so although Romsey sounds great Im not sure if we stand any chance of getting in this year. We seem to be baby boom year. St Georges seems to be doing well. Head at Cantell is great. Upper Shirley High has a nice vibe. Any knowledge of any of them?

TeenTimesTwo · 06/10/2018 19:49

Sorry, don't know. Hopefully someone else will be along in a while.

Kalmkat · 06/10/2018 19:54

Thanks ever so much for replying Smile

Year old thread so a bit confusing

all central Southampton schools are OK at the moment ....
go for catchment, reduce stress

Kalmkat · 06/10/2018 20:56

Yeah sorry for posting in old post. V confusing! If between Cantell and St Georges. Any positive comparisons. Think they are all improving.
