How much homework is average for year8?

DS is in year 8 and doesn't seem to get that much homework. It only takes him 1-1.5 hours a week.

His school is a regular mixed state high school, over subscribed and with good exam results. Now I know that it is daft to correlate amount of homework with academic success, but I would be interested to know how much other year 8's receive?

Also, does anybody have any knowledge to share on differing philosophies in setting homework amounts?

I set my y8 class 1 set of homework a week. It should take 30-45mins.

I'd say core subjects alone should be 1.5-2 hours.

Thanks Maisypops!

At DDs school its 2 hours per night in y8, officially 1 hour per night in y7 but more like 2 at the moment. I'm not a huge fan of massive homework but she appears to be learning a lot and enthusiastic again. The comp has up to 1 hour per night in y7 I'm told, not sure about y8.

My dd is y8 in a school that sounds similar, SW is doing around the same amount of work as your child

Wow! That is a lot lot less than my Year 6 DS!

Y6 levels of homework are silly in my opinion, especially qhen the research suggests that homework at primary has limited impact on progress.

At our school core subjects probably comes to 1.5-2 hours a week. Languages will probably give a 30 min homework fortnightly. History, geography, RE all set homework roughly fortnightly and then creative/practical subjects maybe once a half term.

So you could have a week where you only get 2 hours but then anothet week if all the non core subjects set thay week you could get 4/5.

It also depends on whether students rush homework too. That's often an issue in y8/9.

Equally, some teachers ease off on y8/9 (which only creates issues for those of us who do it properly and then creates issues for y10 when it's clear students have got into bad habits).

DD2 had very little homework in y7, usually only around 2hrs per week.
It has ramped up a bit so far in y8, but I would say

My son didn't have much in year 8, but it's stepped up a lot in yr9.

Ds had way too much in Year 8 3/4 pieces every night (16 in total each week) each taking 20-30 mins but due to slow processing speed it took him much longer.

He's year 9 now & we have moved him. he's getting about half an hour a night most nights but they are leading them in gently

In Year 8 Dd used to get 1-2 pieces per night but she got a whole week to do them in so often saved it up til the weekend.

I think DS had 8-9 pieces of homework timetabled per week. All of which were meant to take up to half an hour. The reality was that every subject was not timetabled every week and he quite often managed to do the subject more quickly.
I'd be surprised if he spent more than 2-3 hours on homework in an average week.

My Y8 DD gets 12 - 14 pieces a week which take between 30 - 60 mins each. A lot of the weekend is spent on homework because she does clubs every night. Her choice.

My ds hardly had anything in Y8. He had a lot more in Y7.

In year 9 he got a lot more, but seemed to be able to keep on top of it, and do well, by doing it in breaktimes at school!

He seems to be getting more now in Y10, as I'd expect, but he's not overwhelmed.
