Suggestions for work experience for humanities-biased year 10?

I saw the really useful thread about the year 12 physicist and wondered if any of you had any ideas for work experience at year 10 level. DS is doing geography and history as well as a MFL (plus the usual core GCSEs) and his school organises work experience next summer. They do have a bank of possible employers but I was also wondering if anyone had any good ideas of people he could approach himself. Outside school he is interested in sport and not much else ;) And he has zero idea at present as to what he wants to do with his life.

We are based in Hampshire so he could potentially get to Reading/Bracknell/Guildford/Winchester or London. We also have relatives in south Devon.

I know it's harder to get work experience for under 16s than over 16s because of DBS requirements etc.

When I was in the equivalent of year 12 I was able to spend a week working at what was the Midland bank.

I have racked my brains and thought about possibly helping out in a local library but would welcome other ideas.

If he likes history and geography and is active, he could volunteer on an archaeological dig? Community projects accept under-18s, often.

They tend to run in the summer mostly.

There are lots of work experience and volunteering opportunities through the RSPB and National Trust - I know some of DD's friends who are now doing geography at uni did that. Might also be worth enquiring about volunteering at any local historic sites/stately homes. My DD helped to lead some workshops at a museum near us when she was contemplating history at university and it only took up two or three hours a week during her long end of year 11 summer.

Also if interested in politics then he should email a few locals MPs or councillors to see if they have any schemes - DD did work experience with our MP (albeit in year 12 so he may have to wait a bit) and really enjoyed it.

A library would be good - especially if he had involvement in the archives, and the archaeology dig a an interesting one.

Also historical re-enactment companies might be an option (not necessarily to join in but offering to volunteer as help or something). And maybe land registry offices/something to do with registry and genealogy.

Local tourist attraction?

What about a placement at Alice Holt?

Ordnance Survey are in Southampton and I believe they take work experience people.

The thing is with work experience is that rarely are there opportunities in a dc's chosen career - if indeed they have any clue at age 15. I think the main advantages of WE are having to interact with adults and possibly members of the public (increasingly few teens have spoken to any adults who are not family members or teachers - social media etc has done away with the requirement to (horrors!) phone anybody up or speak to friends' parents), getting themselves somewhere under their own steam and having to be polite and engaged for two weeks!
