Class sizes

Dd is in year 7 and her class sizes seem high. They have 34 in English and even more in maths. It is top set if that makes any difference.
Is the the norm?
I believe they have two teacher for maths as they have 46 in class.
Thank you

46 is a large class. Do they have a problem with a lack of rooms? It would seem easier to have two smaller classes with one teacher each.

The average class size for my DC school is something like 24, but the top classes have over 30 in each class, the bottom far fewer. It makes sense - those struggling with a subject need more one to one time with the teacher. My dcs have rarely found it a problem.

I am surprised they have a classroom that can take 46. Most classrooms are designed for 30. However, with two teachers it would be a smaller class for each teacher to manage, so perhaps it can work. It would seem another room is not available but I cannot think of a single school with space for 46 in one teaching room.

My kids don't have as many as 40 but top sets are probably over 30 so lower sets can be smaller iyswim.

DS had maths in a group of 60 (and only 1 teacher) for a fair bit of last year (2 classrooms with a partition wall that could roll back).

I suspect with education funding cuts we will all see larger classes.

Top sets tend to be larger. With teacher shortage and budget cuts increasingly larger class sizes are to be expected.

Thank you. At least now I know it happens and can work.
