Why trainers are not allowed to be velcro?

Ds needed white trainers with a non marking sole. I finally found some, only to re-read the instructions and see they needed to be LACED (with an asterisk and written in bold below) *no velcro permitted, only laces.

Anyway, we went shopping again but couldn't find any in the cheaper ranges (he is still a junior size) and I refuse to spend over £40 on p.e trainers, so I sent them in anyway.

Weird. My DC are allowed velcro trainers in secondary, or at least, I've sent them in for yrs & there have been no rejections.

Not a PE teacher, but I have very sporty DC.

You needs laces because they hold the foot in place more strongly. Once DC are secondary age (or younger, if playing a lot) you need this for all contact sports. It's both safer and better for performance.

What size are you after?

TeenTimesTwo · 09/09/2017 16:55

Velcro allowed at DD's school (and any colour).
Sorry, no help, but clearly isn't a universal rule.

AlexanderHamilton · 09/09/2017 16:55

Laced are supposed to be more supportive but when you have children with tiny feet (Dd was size 2 very wide foot in year 7 & ds was size 1 very narrow foot in year 7) then you have no choice.

The teachers were quite welcome to take either of them shopping but laces were not happening!

John Lewis have suitable looking ones (up to a 13) at £30, Sports Direct have various ones at about £25. What is your price ceiling?

(I'm assuming here you do want the more supportive shoe and was wondering if you need help finding ones the right size/price)

AlexanderHamilton · 09/09/2017 17:04

I went to every single shoe & sports shopin 3 different cities to try & get laced white trainers to fit Dd. I failed. Most were too narrow or too shallow.

AlexanderHamilton · 09/09/2017 17:05

What size is he Merry

MerryMarigold · 09/09/2017 17:38

He's a 3. We did sports direct, a massive one. All they were some Nike ones in a very thin nylon fabric, much less supportive than the Velcro ones. There were also some Reebok and Lonsdale but both had dark soles so not confident they didn't mark. Adidas were only from a 4, but tbh they were not a v solid fabric.

I can see laces are more supportive but maybe need to be less specific about the colour.

Not sure about all shops but the adult styles start at 4 in sports direct. There were quite a lot of girls ones but no boys/ neutral.

As they need to be non marking soles I assume they are for indoor use? Are they for things like badminton, squash etc or general general fitness/cardio workouts.

Non marking trainers will usually state it on the sole or label.

AlexanderHamilton · 09/09/2017 17:52

Sports Direct do several but you may struggle to find them in stock in branches.

Thanks! The confusing thing is that that seen to be for outdoor and indoor sports. Ds wore them for x country. He has badminton on Monday. There is nothing to say he needs different trainers. Confused

Ask him what people really wear. White usually means predominantly white rather than utterly plain.

If it's mainly white and any accent colours are subdued, match the school colours or at least aren't neon, then they may well be fine.

For indoor sports, look for tennis trainers (which are discounted at the moment as it is end of season)

MerryMarigold · 10/09/2017 08:03

Good idea on the tennis.
