Advice needed on Biology GCSE result

Hi All,

Could do with some advice.

DS was predicted an A in Biology. He sat two papers and on the day of the second paper he was ill (vomiting & migraines) school were informed and made a note.

He got a C in biology and on the score breakdown we can see that for paper 1 he got 62 and on paper 2 he got 24 meaning he was 3 marks away from a B. We asked for a re-mark but no movement.

Question is, is there anything we can do?

We are talking nearly 40 marks difference between 2 papers when the only differentiating factor was the he was ill.

Thanks tiggytape!

I hadn't thought of asking the school if indeed the exam board took it into account, I just assumed they had. We had the papers remarked but they have advised that there were no errors so think any further queries we'll need to take up with the exam board directly but guess it's worth looking into.

He doesn't normally suffer with migraines but I think in this instance it was a mix of pressure and nerves as he had found the first paper hard so guess he must of worked himself into a state.

I thought GCSE Biology was 3 exam papers and there was also a 4th unit for the controlled assessment.

If he had a proper migraine he would not have even been able to get to school let alone sit the exam!!
Too late now to apply for special consideration

Really jjbutt? My DS did all his exams at home having not been at school for months due to daily migraines. He did about two papers with a migraine. They are different for everyone. A friend can't get out of bed. DS can if necessary now that they are slightly more controlled and not as debilitating and he doesn't tend to vomit now.

Malleiras - as mentioned above we had migraine issues too. Special consideration can be given but is usually only 1 to 5 % as far as I understand and 5% would be for something like a family bereavement.

catslife - just two exams no controlled assessment.

That's probably iGCSE then rather than GCSE - not that it makes much difference for the Special consideration, which as others have said is only a really small percentage adjustment in the marks.

jjbutt - Thanks for the insight.

We're familiar with migraines because my husband has been a sufferer for years.
