Year 12 / 6th form support thread

minesawine · 03/09/2017 21:27

The term is about to start and I though it would be good to have a support group to help us on our 6th form journey.

May the year be drama-free and our DC's study hard and without complaint Halo

Dd found it useful too, now firmly back on shortlist.

Witchend · 07/07/2018 18:00

but often will make offers to those with lower predicted grades, presumably assuming it will encourage them to outperform their targets.
That's useful to know. Dd1 was thinking about looking there, I think that will encourage her as we don't know what her predicted grades will be until September.

Decorhate · 07/07/2018 18:07

Witchend I'm not saying that is the case for all courses, more an example of why it is good to go to the open days if you can, to glean these little bits of info. Ds doesn't have his predicted grades yet so have been slightly concerned we might be wasting our time if they don't match the usual offer.

I'd probably consider contacting the subject department for your dc to see what their policy is.

Laniakea · 07/07/2018 19:54

dd had an interesting day there too, it's still her first choice though she'd be happy to go to Bangor.

They've changed the entrance requirements slightly for her course. Rather than A*AA it's now AAB but placements abroad are now based on performance in the first year rather than automatic. They will also drop a grade in one subject for an A in the EPQ. They also said that if they offer you a place after interview & you make them your firm then they would be likely to accept you with a dropped grade.

Witchend · 07/07/2018 20:40

I'm not saying that is the case for all courses that's what dd1 said when I told her. She's more on the ball than me. She's not sure if it's true for maths so she's going to ask.

Piggywaspushed · 09/07/2018 19:26

Well, today's good news for those of you following the travails of my shiftless DS is that he came home today to announce that he in fact got a C for his year 12 Spanish exam: the teacher had neglected to notice several of his answers so he got 9 more marks. Small hoorah. Year 12 exam results now CCD. Guess that means we can aim for BBC hopelessly optimistic

Last week's not work experience of doing unifrog type stuff does seem to have galvanised him a little.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 09/07/2018 20:13

Well done to your DS, Piggywaspushed. As I said upthread, I'm a firm believer in DC blooming academically at different rates. You may find those extra 9 marks boost his confidence enough to raise his game massively in Year 13. Fingers crossed for him.

Piggywaspushed · 09/07/2018 20:23

Thanks! We'll see!

Monkey2001 · 09/07/2018 21:37

Great news Piggy, hope he feels inspired. Not very impressive from teacher though - must be difficult for your DS to respect his teachers with the experience he has had. Sad

Piggywaspushed · 09/07/2018 21:57

She is leaving. I can only hope the replacement is an improvement, although with MFL recruitment as it is...

Piggywaspushed · 11/07/2018 20:56

Well ,some of the future gazing stuff DS's school ahs been doing (they are very good at this stuff at his place) must have galvanised him at least a bit. he has found a course at Salford Uni he wants to do: International Politics and Security (and he can learn Arabic! What's not to love?) 112 UCAS points.

Anyone know anything about Salford Uni?

AtiaoftheJulii · 11/07/2018 23:10

Dh went there! It was 1989 and he wanted to live in Manchester, and didn't have the grades for actual Manchester Grin Did Sociology, went to approx 6 million gigs, had a great time.

Sorry, I have no newer information! He does now have a far more important job than me with my Oxford degree, lol.

Laniakea · 12/07/2018 11:32

that course sounds really interesting Piggy. I know nothing about Salford other than everyone I know who has been to Manchester loves it & I nearly got run over by a tram there!

Got dd's results back - she got ABB in the first set & BBC in the second. Lots of tears but after speaking to the teachers she feels better. They were going to predict A*AA (not that it matters, she's sure she wants to apply most results) - can't do that on these results so she's asked to do another set in September. She needs AAB/ABB.

Physics was inexplicably bad & the biol & chem both should've been As ... we're putting it down to being ill, she ran out of time had problems with the multiple choice etc. So not great but not hopeless.

Laniakea · 12/07/2018 11:47

Post results

She was right on the grade boundaries

I should give up trying to post when I have a 7 yo yelling at me

She’s got loads of work to do over the summer & i’ve found a tutor for physics (hopefully just for a few hours cos it costs a fortune). She did really well on the maths bits - she’s the only one not doing maths - lost no marks at all but the longer answers were awful, completely over thinking & then missing the obvious.

SleightOfMind · 12/07/2018 11:59

Have you seen the RG university admissions tutor’s thread on AMA today.

Very enlightening

Laniakea · 12/07/2018 12:17

oh I remember what I wanted to ask - has anyone used/looked at snap revise snaprevise.co.uk/ ?

School mentioned it to dd but I don't know anyone who has actually used it.

TheFrendo · 12/07/2018 12:51

SleightofMind,

What is AMA? ..and.. please post a link to the thread.

glitterbiscuits · 12/07/2018 14:58

TheFrendo AMA = Ask Me Anything, it's under the Other heading.

I have never learned how to do the clicky links.

TheFrendo · 12/07/2018 15:31

Thanks. Got it now.

MrsBartlet · 12/07/2018 21:25

Thanks for the link Laniakea. Very useful as ds is doing 2 A levels and 2 pre-u's and I would like to know what the universities think of the pre-u.

Laniakea · 13/07/2018 12:23

Final results are ABC which is quite different from the CCC she was told on Monday. They hadn’t marked the papers fully. I’m really cross, she was a mess on Monday. Perfect end to a shitty year!

Piggywaspushed · 13/07/2018 18:01

It's a great thread the AMA. Bit elitist though , so not really for students like DS1. She basically says of they aren't RG, don't bother with university. Not sure that's quite my world view.

I'd be delighted if mine got the grades for Lincoln or Nottingham Trent !!

AtiaoftheJulii · 13/07/2018 18:19

I stopped reading when s/he referred to some students taking their own lives as "attention seeking that went wrong".

Danglingmod · 13/07/2018 18:39

Anyone at any open days tomorrow?
