Brit School for 6th Form

DS, doing GCSEs this year, loves drama, art and other arts-based subjects. He's not going to be able to stay at his current school as he just won't make the grade to get in their 6th Form and, in fact, we've realised that it wouldn't be the best place for him. He's very keen to go to the Brit School for 6th Form. He does a BritKids weekend class there and loves it. I can see that it'd be a very good fit for him but know nothing about how to get in, apart from open days being soon. We are within catchment. Has anyone else been through 6th Form application process and can advise me please?

Mine did sixth form there and loved it. The details are all on the BRIT website I think but from memory he needs to fill in an online form, including some personal statement-type questions (favourite actor and why, that kind of thing) and get a reference from his current school. They do open evenings which you should go to get a better picture about what it's really like there. He would also get a clearer idea about the different options there, which are theatre, musical theatre or CAP which is a community theatre BTEC and really suits some kids.
After that, they call some of the students for audition and they spend a morning in workshops/doing a monologue.
Also, he and you also need to go to other sixth form open evenings as the Brit is really competitive for places and it's good to have a positive back up plan which would really suit him. It could be that there are other colleges near you that do the BTEC qualifications.
Best of luck!

Thanks you gnu. How much did your DC need to demonstrate their passion for the course they wanted to do please?

I don't really know how to answer that. Get hold of a copy of the application form and you'll see what they want your child to write about - just make sure their love of their subject shines through, and if there's any evidence (for instance doing Brit Kids) then make sure that's in there. What course would your son apply for? I think some courses are less competitive than straight theatre or MT and your original post says he's arty in general.
