Further maths Gcse Ungraded and University

Hi, hoping someone can maybe point me in the right direction.

Ds was in the top maths set and was doing fine although at the lower end of the class. At the last parents evening before exams it was discussed about whether he shouldn't the higher paper.
Ds did not want to, he thought it was too much extra work and would prefer to concentrate on subjects that he intended to use further and use the time to get a decent grade in the standard maths test.
The teacher appeared in agreement but also said see how he goes don't have to decide now.

Things didn't change but then the exam dates came out and there was a date for the higher maths paper. Ds spoke to the teacher who said don't worry just have a go.

He came out of the exam and said he couldn't answer the questions, I was annoyed as I didn't want his confidence knocked but it was too late to do anything about it.

He go a U. On the face of it he wasn't bothered thinking we just won't mention it and a number of his peers also got a U.

He has been today to enroll in a new sixth form for A levels and they have said should he decide he does want to go to Uni this grade will have to be disclosed and will bring his average down.

He's fuming and worried. His other grades were maths 5 lit 8 Lang 7, and the rest A and B's.

He still hasn't made up his mind about Uni, but what can we do to give him the best chance should he decide to go?

I'm not sure what the teacher was thinking as surely this will bring his stats down too?

Its really taken the shine off his results he was so pleased.

CAN'T see it making much difference but wondering why he did it at all seeing as his maths wasnt that strong. But yes you do need to list all exams taken on UCAS.

He'll need to list it on his UCAS form, but I really can't see it making any difference to the success of any applications. Mostly they care about predicted grades and A-level results and if they run an eye over his GCSE results they're perfectly respectable.

The sorts of university courses that really care about GCSE results wouldn't be accepting him anyway, they count A*s and the like.

He kept up in class and his maths marks were higher in the mocks

That's the problem with Further Maths, it only goes down to a C so there really is a cliff edge between the C and the U.
It was really daft of the school to enter him tbh, but can't be helped now!
I reckon for any job applications or similar, he can just pretend it never happened. No certificate - no reason to disclose!

Hoolit · 25/08/2017 19:00

Totally agree on all points thank you, you've put our mind at rest.
Interesting about the marks, but onwards and upwards.

I agree with that. DD did short-course RE in y10 and got a D. Because that is on an entirely different certificate and wasn't a full GCSE anyway we have forgotten about it. A bit like I did with General Studies AO in the mid 80s.

Yes that's what I was thinking, no one knows I ever did A level biology Wink and I thought of all those people who do resits to get on their chosen course it doesn't hold them back.
I'm sure he will be fine, I think now we've had time to think about it panic is over he can also build his points and cv in other ways.
Thanks for all the advice
