GCSE results

I'm confused.

Just been past a local secondary school, not the one my children attend, and they have two huge banners displayed. They state that the school has had its best results ever and congratulate the 'class of 2017'.

The reason that I am confused is that GCSE results are not out until tomorrrow (daughter completely stressed about them, but that's another thread entirely). It can't be A Level results as it is not a 6th form. So, do schools get to know results earlier than students? Am I being completely stupid?

Not important or anything, but we are curious and I thought who better to clarify the confusion than the knowledgable Mumsnet collective?

The percentage statistics are available to exams officers and SLT today. The individual achievement results are out tomorrow morning.

Of course the exams officers have to know a day before so they can print out the slips ready for tomorrow morning. They are not allowed to share the breakdown information though.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 23/08/2017 13:20

Yeah, schools get the data today. My DH is in school dealing with his.

The school must have had that banner printed up before they had the data though?? Hmm

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 23/08/2017 13:23

Also, as it's the school's ONLY set of results under the new 1-9 system, it's a bit of a random claim to be making.

My friend had a phonecall this morning from his sons secondary school asking him to come in at 8am tomorrow to be in the high achievers photograph, they couldn't say anymore - I assume they have the results already!

loobylou10 · 23/08/2017 13:27

Schools have all results today. Husband just got back!

ConfessorKahlan · 23/08/2017 13:33

All of this makes sense now. I did wonder if it was someting along the lines of the schools having the percentages information.

However, the school must have had those banners printed earlier to be able to put them up today as Lowdoorinthewal1 points out.

Thanks everyone for clearing the confusion!

AFAIK there is no other big mystery apart from the taking of the losing team's ribbon to the FA Cup Final.

Quiz question alert: What's taken to the Final but never used?

Stats are a bugger though - think damned lies. November resits are likely to be included.

LoniceraJaponica · 23/08/2017 13:50

"November resits are likely to be included"

I thought November resits didn't exist any more, and that schools couldn't include them in the stats anyway.

noblegiraffe · 23/08/2017 14:38

November resits exist for Maths and English, and schools are unlikely to want to include them in their stats as nationally they're terrible.

You can get a banner printed on the day. It just costs you more. Grin

My gut feeling is that putting it up the day before isn't quite right though. Just imagine if you go to that school and find that your results are way down on what you expect. Rub it in!

Jaimx86 · 23/08/2017 15:03

Yep - schools have results. Just doing my analysis.
'Best' results could mean several things depending on how the school manipulates the data.

One of the local secondarys when I was at school was very good at putting out statements into the press that looked impressive unless you actually knew anything about education.
For example they had a huge press page about their amazing A grade student (their only one who got above a D that year) who had "only been at the school 2 months". The implication being that they'd taught them quickly in 2 months rather than they'd had the teaching elsewhere and only sat the exams there.

I could imagine them having a banner saying something along the lines of "Achieved more grade 1 maths than any other school in the county". Grin
