Labelling uniform

MrGrumpy01 · 20/08/2017 21:49

DC1 is due to start secondary school and I've started to get her new uniform. Do people label everything or just the things that come off regularly - so blazers and jumpers?

My secondary school teacher sister has advised naming her calculator so I will do that -possibly sharpie?

I have sew in labels as I have a 'thing' about stickers and writing on labels - but especially stickers

If I need to start sewing I will need to start now.

Thanks

I used a staedtler laundry pen to label my kids clothes this year. It had a finer point than my sharpie one so less bleeding of the ink

MrGrumpy01 · 20/08/2017 22:06

The staedtler pen doesn't look too bad, I might try and get one of those.

I got mine in tesco

BarchesterFlowers · 20/08/2017 22:09

I sew everything in - but by machine, I just run a vertical row of stitching at each end of the name label in the same colour as whatever it is I am sewing it in to. Takes seconds.

I am still using the name labels I bought at the start of nursery!!!

dementedpixie · 20/08/2017 22:11

I've never sewn a label on in my life but have used iron on ones in the past

Oncewaswho · 20/08/2017 22:15

Yes, name everything. I use a combination of stamp, stickers, sharpie, iron on transfers (white for dark items) and sew-ins.

Regressionconfession · 20/08/2017 22:15

No advice but I have a thing about stickers too!! Apple stickers are the absolute worst!

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 20/08/2017 22:18

Was chuffed to bits that a sewn in name tag meant that ds's hoody was returned to us a few days later by post from a huge 1 week scout camp. 🙂 I name everything. Still doesn't guarantee safe return.

lacebell10 · 21/08/2017 14:32

Label blazer jumper pe kit; one set of shirt and bottoms which they wear for all pe days; water bottles not that you'll get these back; calculator dictionary ruler protractor and compass. If generic bag add a bright colour as zip pulls.

Oncewaswho · 21/08/2017 15:23

I don't think my DCs are organised enough to keep a specific shirt and trousers for PE days. I think DS had PE on consecutive days last year too so couldn't wear the same shirt unless washed and ironed that evening. That's where the stamp is handy, it only takes a moment to stamp inside the collar of a shirt so all of ours are named that way.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 21/08/2017 17:36

Label anything that you would like returned.

Aventurine · 21/08/2017 19:31

I write names on everything in pilot laundry market or sharpie

MrGrumpy01 · 21/08/2017 20:54

I need to get sewing don't I? Grin

Pens, pencils, rulers - I'm not that bothered, but she will have a spare set at the bottom of her bag - apparently they do equipment checks, so it will save her having to traipse to student services to buy replacements.

I will figure out where to name the tie - I can see that 'disappearing' - it is a clip on, so no need for tie practice. She looks at me very wide eyed when I tell her I was able to do a tie in reception. (they just wear polo shirts at primary)

Don't name all her pens and pencils - she'll get teased. Don't name anything with stickers with flowers or hearts on - she'll get teased.

Do name everything else (with plain labels) and make sure she knows where lost property is. So much decent stuff gets thrown away in secondary because it's not labelled and/or kids don't check lost property when they do lose stuff.

AngeloftheSouth84 · 21/08/2017 23:29

Label EVERYTHING. I made the mistake of not labelling her PE kit last term which I believe led to someone else wearing it and my dd having to do it in her pants Sad

MrGrumpy01 · 31/08/2017 21:52

Thanks for all the advice. I have labelled all the uniform and used a sharpie on the calculator.

DH is now eyeing up the labelling machine from Aldi. Hmm

I labelled all of DD's when I was needing distraction therapy from DC1s GCSE results. Did the whole lot in about an hour with sew-in labels. Am going to 'run amok' with the name 'stampie' on rulers/calculator etc...over the weekend.

FWIW I even labelled DC1's sports socks but still odd ones went missing never to be seen again.

I reckon schools should have a uniform armistice at least half-termly.

I'm having success with the Stamptastic.

But for expensive things, i.e. Blazer, I make myself sew in one name tag aswell.

Couldn't bear to sew too many though!!

My DS's school have a lost property corner, I nip in and rummage every time I go in for a meeting, sports event etc. They also drag it all out for the Christmas and Easter fairs and encourage parents to look for their child's stuff if they attend.

goodeggsarehardtocatch · 01/09/2017 15:50

I'm loving stamptastic . No bastard needles and tangle-to-fuck thread. No ironing bastard-burnt fingers on labels. Just stamp and go and I even washed a few bits and it stayed on !
Can you tell I have two DC with all the extra sports club kit ? I hate name tags Angry

MrGrumpy01 · 01/09/2017 20:16

I can't do stickers or stamps. I struggled to write her name in her craft apron. Sewing it has to be.

Starting on the smaller ones polo shirts now. I'm fine once I start I just need to get my act together in the first place.

I went to use my Stampastic ink pad only to find that it had totally dried up - GRRRR!!
