Worcester, UK advice please

I'm moving back to Worcester next year after many years in the big smoke.

I have a teenage boy currently in secondary private school but will most probably be looking at state due to circumstances. I know everyone sees good and bad things in every school but is there a general feeling on the best state school in and around Worcester. We aren't catholic so will have to rule these out.

Many thanks in advance

There are several good schools in Worcester and the county. Try having a look at the Dfes school finder website.
As a generalisation, the county as a whole does better than the English average.

I know you want the best for your DS but you may find that the best schools are already full and cannot accommodate you. Be realistic: you may be looking for spaces rather than the best fit.

What age is your DS. Some areas do a three-tier system so you could be looking at a middle school and not start Secondary until Y9 i.e. you might yet be in position to buy/rent in the 'right' catchment and be in with the same chance as everyone else.

Hi senua

This is all new to me and I've often wondered what the abbreviations mean such as DS ?

Anyway my situ is slightly more different in that my son will be going into year 10! I've thought of private and could possibly consider heathfields in wolverley but I've not heard great things.

I'm afraid that there are a lot of acronyms on MN (mumsnet). You just have to get used to them! All your family are called 'dear' so your son is your 'dear son', DS. There's a list here.

Look ahead to sixth form. See which one you like the look of and see what their entry requirements are. As long as he does enough at GCSE to get in then that's enough. You don't need more than that. More than that may be nice but it's not essential.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about my child being at any of the Worcester city state schools. Nunnery seems to be the one everyone wants at the moment though, or Chantry if you're looking at a more rural house.

Thanks guys for your thoughts. I've heard chantry is good and I'm from tenbury wells so this could work well? However I like to be close to a city and being closer to the centre would work better for DS and my daughter who is 17 and potentially going to the Uni ? This is all really helpful :))
