Ds has had 3 results this morning- can anyone explain if the number in brackets after the letter grade is the % achieved or the number of marks or perhaps something totally different? Just curious. Thanks

DS has had 4 results this morning (via his school portal) and we didn't get a number on that, just the letter. It is probably the percentage uniform mark which is not the actual percentage but a 'normed' result: "For example, a student who gets the minimum mark necessary for a Grade A* obtains a percentage uniform mark of 90. A student who gets a mark halfway between the Grade D threshold and Grade C threshold achieves a percentage uniform mark of 55."

DS's school e-mail yesterday said that they don't get the marks for the individual CIE papers till next week.

my ds only had 1 result this morning and he just told me the grade and that there was no % mark. It was for Eng Lang (the parrot paper!). Should he have a % mark too?

Good luck to everyone collecting grades today.

This was a student login to the CIE portal so I guess that is why there was more information. It makes sense about the standardisation so thanks for that explanation.

oh gosh yes, the parrot paper, I'd forgotten about that! I wonder if there are some unexpected grades due to that.

Yes the parrot!!!
One of ds's classmates was predicted an A* and got a C. Apparently he fell into the parrot trap according to ds so I expect that is what happened there. It's a big drop though.

So should ds have a % mark through his school login page? Ds did well so I don't think he would be hiding the mark from us! (unlike his sister who would probably feign log-in problems and not tell us anything)

How do you do a strike through? -I can't get it to work.-

PamBeasleyHalpert · 10/08/2017 15:54

My guess is that only the CIE website has the scores as well but presumably school can provide these at a later date

We got the component marks for CIE IGCSE papers today.

Am consumed with curiosity about the parrot issue, if anyone can bear to explain it :-)

1805 · 19/08/2017 22:33

The Eng Lang paper had a comprehension about a man describing his wife as if she was a parrot. Something like that anyway. Some pupils may have thought the man was in love with a parrot. Everyone thought it was a bit weird and the kids all went onto social media to discuss it and joke about it.

Ontopofthesunset · 19/08/2017 22:50

DS says (and said at the time) that the parrot was really a non-issue as the whole point of the passage was that you weren't completely sure what the relationship was until the end, although it was heavily hinted at (whose girlfriend or wife leaves through the open window?) As he pointed out, it was supposed to test comprehension. He thought it was pretty straightforward.

PamBeasleyHalpert · 20/08/2017 13:45

I thought it was the other way round - man is describing what you think is a woman but then says she flew out of the window and that's when it is clear she is a parrot. That's what my ds wrote about and he got an A* so I am guessing it was correct!

OP posts:
Ontopofthesunset · 20/08/2017 18:35

Yes, that's exactly what I meant - DS said it obviously wasn't a woman because she flew out of the open window! But then perhaps that's why our DSs both got A* - because they understood it.

1805 · 20/08/2017 23:34

I obviously remembered incorrectly. I stand corrected.
