Five teachers have left DD's school including two of her GCSE teachers!

DD has told me that five of her teachers have left her school including her German and her Maths teacher, the head of English and both pastoral care teachers.

She goes in year 11 in September and I'm worried about continuity for her German and Maths GCSEs. Apparently her new Maths teacher is the teacher who has previously only taught Business. Should I be worried?

School is dying on it's arse and she doesn't intend to stay there for 6th form.

@OhOhDearling I certainly didn't mean to imply that the poster was lying - the exact opposite. Even Chinese whispers start with a nugget of truth. That's why I was wondering if the teacher had been offered redundancy in a meeting and then told the class or if a long term supply teacher had been told that they wouldn't be needed after tomorrow.

Beelzebop · 24/07/2017 13:28

As a teacher who left after a mental health crisis caused by the job I plead to all parents to start making noise about this! I loved my job, was very good and would love to go back. If conditions changed, I would be back in a shot! It's even difficult to get a part time post, none available!

JufusMum · 24/07/2017 14:37

I guess I should have pointed out we are a very small school - only 52 children in DD's year, about average for all other years, so there are actually not that many teachers in the school!

52 is very small for a state school high school year group. How many are in the whole school?

TeenAndTween · 24/07/2017 15:42

I could easily imagine a 10% turn over rate for secondary teachers?

I don't like the idea of a business teacher teaching maths though (unless they are really a maths teacher in disguise)

At least they are a trained and experienced teacher. Academies can appoint anyone off the street as a 'teacher'.

TeenAndTween · 24/07/2017 15:59

Academies can appoint anyone off the street as a 'teacher'.

So can private schools.

I don't suppose Eton/Harrow/Winchester do though, without very good cause. Neither do I expect decent Academies to either, especially in maths as poor maths results will screw their progress 8 measures / Ofsted ratings etc.

It is not even clear whether the school is LA controlled or Academy or Private. At that size I wouldn't be too surprised if it were private. Year groups of 50-60 is way too small to be sensibly viable imo.

Goingtobeawesome · 24/07/2017 17:06

I'll be sure, not, to tell my child you're accusing them of lying.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 24/07/2017 17:12

It is bad. But not as bad as User has implied. We even have a 'real' English teacher lined up for my maternity leave starting in January. Which is better than two years ago when no one applied.
We've lost a lot of staff this time. Interestingly all to retirement or independent sector no one is staying in the state sector.

think about it @goingotbewesome

In what circumstances is a teacher sacked on the spot?

Would a teacher then reenter the classroom and have access to students in those circumstances?

No

JufusMum · 24/07/2017 21:25

It's a very undersubscribed state secondary (academy) in a village with mainly village intake. Threatened with closure but joined with another school 9 miles away. Over 50% of the school buildings are closed. Small classes sounds great but because we are undersubscribed we end up with the kids who have been excluded from every other school.

I strongly suspect there was a tipping point a few years ago - we are now utterly beyond that.

I often get the 'get into Teaching' adverts on FB. Without fail they are torn apart by current and ex teachers.

I have colleagues seriously investigating the feasibility of suing DoE for these ads.

Renarde75 · 25/07/2017 13:06

Not being funny - I find them massively triggering. Had to hide them in the end.

Renarde75 · 25/07/2017 13:08

The only way I think that a teacher could be removed with immediate affect might be for a gross misconduct.

But they would be suspended and asked to go home whilst the investigation progressed. It would have to be big though.

CauliflowerSqueeze · 25/07/2017 13:12

Lots of teachers leaving because they're sick (sometimes literally) of the pressure from all angles.

user1497480444 · 25/07/2017 13:13

exactly, and they most certainly would not be wandering back into class room to pass the time of day chit chatting about it to children.

user1497480444 · 25/07/2017 13:32

@goingtobeawesome

not calling your child a liar, but what she says happened didn't happen, although she may for some reason think that it did.

A (highly regarded) secondary near me with 2000 kids has 30 teachers leaving apparently.

Bobbiepin · 25/07/2017 22:58

@Teenandtween academies will hire whoever is cheapest. Mostly unqualified teachers. Education is a business now. My school is fighting to retain its 6th form, which is the only part of the school OFSTED rated 'good', because it doesn't make enough profit for the trust we are run by. Caring about results comes 2nd to caring about the bonuses at the top.

FlowerFairyLights · 25/07/2017 22:59

Infant school near me has 8 out of 11 leaving :(

Every time I think of returning to teaching I remember....

BeautifulWintersMorning · 25/07/2017 23:01

30 out of over 100 teachers that is

user1497480444 · 26/07/2017 03:13

There are several schools with a 100% walk out. One was in the news, but the other I know of wasn't

BeautifulWintersMorning · 26/07/2017 07:34

I saw that in the news
