Can someone please explain what this means on a report? My sons has declined as the year as gone by but I need to know what it is so I can knip it in the bud.

Thanks.

he isn't working hard enough, and doesn't have the habit or culture of working hard to get good results.

I think it means just sitting down and getting on with things without any excuses. I think this can be taught and you can learn it.
For boys in particular, the tricky thing is computer games as it can cut into a lot of their time.

He's lazy.

Runningissimple · 22/07/2017 10:27

He's not producing his best quality work in lessons.

How do you change it? God knows! Keep monitoring his school work and homework. Make him redo homeworks if they're sloppy. Praise and reward effort over achievement.

I've been doing this for years with my son (now 15). He's not super diligent but he's not bottoming out either. I've been very tenacious but I'm a secondary school teacher and see disengaged kids every day. It's such a wasted opportunity and I want to know that I did everything possible to stop my son joining their ranks. He's still hanging on in there and he's not a natural grafter Grin

Sometimes I make my son finish off worksheets he clearly didn't complete in lessons. He is shockingly lazy though. Grin

At my daughter's school, the 'work ethic' column mainly reports effort, but also encompasses engagement in lessons and completion of homework to the required standard.

What year is your son? I have three teenage boys and I've found that effort can take a dip in Y8-Y9.

namechange4now · 22/07/2017 19:46

Ok ta. I monitor and reward achievements. Make him redo homework, infact his homework is always good or outstanding but takes up to 2 hours/night. He spends 1 hour a day on his computer AFTER he has done what he needs. He's in bed for 9 every night inc weekends.

thesecond he has just finished y7 so if it dips between y8-y9 I'm in trouble!
