Cheating on DofE expedition

BeverleyGoldberg2 · 13/07/2017 00:45

Dd & pals have completed their Bronze DoE expedition. There were 7 per group (28 total) & Dd reports that 2 of her group rang their parents on Day 1 following which said parents delivered food which those girls ate (no sharing). One even had a clean towel & full shower kit brought so managed to shower & wash her hair!!
I gather from another thread here that there's a risk of all 7 failing if any cheating is established but I want Dd to report this to her leaders.
Should she do so? If she won't (misplaced loyalty), should I?

Just wait and see what happens and if anything is said. They'll ask her soon enough if anything is amiss.

BeverleyGoldberg2 · 13/07/2017 00:53

But if none of the honest 5 say anything these 2 girls will pass despite having cheated? That's not in the spirit of it surely?

On D of E our students have to hand in their phones and given on old style Nokia brick for emergencies. They are also only allowed to eat the food they were issued on day 1 (they do get more water delivered each day).

I find it surprising (not saying I don't believe you, OP) that these parents would collide and do things that so clearly go against the rules. It's really disappointing and smacks of PFB.

Not sure what your DD should do, though. Confused

*Collide = collude Blush

We stopped at a mates house for a cuppa and some biscuits. If she reports them she's an arse tbh ...

haggisaggis · 13/07/2017 05:07

Dd's bronze was in the middle of nowhere, no mobile phone coverage. Toilet was a screen round a patch of grass and water was from the farmer's hose. No chance of cheating!

Shadow666 · 13/07/2017 05:18

People work bloody hard to pass DoE. I think, as her parent, that you should have a chat with the teacher in charge about what went on. It's really not on to condone cheating. Hopefully as your daughter didn't benefit from the cheating she'll be ok.

pigeondujour · 13/07/2017 06:30

Neither of you should say anything to the teacher.

SpeakOutMum · 13/07/2017 10:25

The Beverlator2 - Is this a state or private school? It wouldn't surprise me if D of E cheating was ignored, accepted or even encouraged at our private Prep/College. We have just had the HM and other senior staff actually making pupils cheat at their CE (Common Entrance) final exams. He claims he has done nothing wrong, it's all for the good of the children, and it's commonplace.

No, cheating is not in the spirit of exams or D of E, and your daughter can hold her head up high in the knowledge she deserves her's.

BubblesBuddy · 13/07/2017 19:01

My DDs friend was failed for blowing a whistle in sheer joy about 20 yds from the finish of the expedition bit. Not allowed apparently. A teacher heard it. If they didn't confess who did it, the whole group would be disqualified. Stinks really. Also, D of E means nothing in the real world! Everyone does it!

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 13/07/2017 19:07

I would normally agree with the keep quiet scenario, but its unfair if they fail as a group because of the actions of 2 of them. DCs school said this was a possibility , if anybody was caught cheating. If my DS had potentially failed because of other kids, I'd have gone mental

I have one on gold and one on silver. I have only a vague idea of where their expeditions even are. They are supposed to do it themselves! We are like haggis earlier, ours have no mobile reception and for bronze they did get a water hose. Otherwise they have to collect and sterilize their water or carry it all with them. Doesn't seem fair to me that other children are mollycoddled through it. I suppose in the end the joke is on them in that they won't have the skills etc it's meant to developer, just the piece of paper.

ragged · 13/07/2017 20:17

DD just did bronze.
I would so totally keep quiet. Her risk to run if found out.
I wouldn't be so placid about Gold, btw, but bronze... meh.

For DD's lot, The adult supervising volunteers were hanging around at the campsite 24/7, so unlikely an unnoticed parent could have dropped off a shower kit. Anyway, towel+soap+travel size shampoo not exactly a huge burden to bring along, and showers were available & otherwise desperately desirable for the teenage boys permitted. Why would a parental delivery be required Confused

steppemum · 13/07/2017 20:30

Hmm, I am a bit sceptical of this.

ds has just done his bronze and they were supervised.
On the walk they had regular check points and at the campsite they were observed from a distance.
They were banned from phones, but many of them had phones and used them in the tent.

No showers at the campsite, but they coudl use the loos

There is no way they would have been able to meet parents and get shower stuff and food

silkpyjamasallday · 13/07/2017 20:36

I wouldn't mention anything just yet if I were you, they may well have been seen by whoever was in charge and the consequences will come the way of the 2 girls they may have seen meeting with parents. We were watched with binoculars from afar, I know because my form teacher saw us playing a game of push each other down a hill and chucking cow pats at each other BlushI asked how he knew and he said that they had people watching along our mapline away from checkpoints.

However it is possible to get away with things unnoticed, I met up with my boyfriend at the time who had a car who brought us nice snacks and my whole group got quite stoned without getting caught. We also all had our phones for music...
