Shocked that DS is being moved down a tier after assessments - what are your thoughts?

So DS year 7 - last few months has been telling us he is bored in most classes finding the work too easy and some classes he's having to ask for more work to do.

We see his homework and see in his books how easy the work seems to be. Homework gets handed in but never see it after that. Assessments he found easy this year as well he said and some of the results he got back were really good. So now been told he is being dropped down a tier - the new tiering information is based on the pupils' most recent assessments. This data indicted that his scores were slightly below the average for his current band.

Ive emailed school saying well ok but if he is bored and unenthused now due to not being challenged how on earth by dropping him a tier will he be :(

Yes agree Giles, the co-ordinator is very good and appears to be wanting to monitor him..he gets on well with her as well which shouldnt but does help. Im going to put it on an email etc. though

Think also there are a couple of boys that have been mean to him it he past in PE and he whittling about that but Ive said you've all got the summer to mature and it prob wont even be an issue so lets address that if need be in Sept

Yikes - life was so much easier when I was at school it was you were either in class A or B - you did tests results were in % and OLevels were marked at A-C - job done!

Ha yes. I did gcses not o levels bit it certainly sounds simpler. I remember being grouped I was in top sets for most things and I remember certainly with maths that we took either a mock or some kind of exam early and if we got c or above we took the higher level paper. Which was the only way to get an A the intermediate went up to a B I think.

I can't see how it would be beneficial to limit what a kid does in one subject based on another subject as all that would do is increase the gap between the higher achievers and those in lower tiers.

I'm sure there is a simple explanation and I very much doubt it's the case that he will be held back for everything.

But as I said it wouldn't hurt them to hold a meeting or send home s one paperwork or hell even email people to explain how it works as all of the parents will be equally clueless as it's so different
